FBI says QAnon conspiracy theories a domestic terrorism threat

The FBI has identified conspiracy theories, including those espoused by QAnon, as a domestic terrorism threat, according to report Thursday.

It is the first time the FBI has labeled fringe conspiracy theories as a terrorism threat.

Yahoo News reported the intelligence bulletin, which it says originated from the FBI’s Phoenix office. The previously unpublicized bulletin was released in May, according to the report.

The FBI bulletin specifically mentions QAnon, a group that believes there is a deep state working against President Trump, and Pizzagate, a conspiracy theory that Hillary Clinton and other Democratic leaders are operating a child sex trafficking ring underneath a Washington, D.C., pizza shop.

The FBI believes these stories will spread, “driving both groups and individual extremists to carry out criminal or violent acts,” the bulletin said. Agents are on alert that such conspiracy theories could spread during the 2020 election, the bureau said.

Both Pizzagate and QAnon conspiracies have been linked to acts of violence.

Trump Drops Plans to Nominate John Ratcliffe as Director of National Intelligence

WASHINGTON — President Trump on Friday abruptly dropped his plan to nominate Representative John Ratcliffe, Republican of Texas, as the nation’s top intelligence official after questions by Republicans and Democrats about his qualifications and concern over whether he had exaggerated his résumé.

Mr. Ratcliffe, a vocal supporter of Mr. Trump, had come under intense scrutiny since the president declared on Sunday on Twitter that the lawmaker was his pick to succeed Dan Coats, who is stepping down as director of national intelligence on Aug. 15. The selection generated scant enthusiasm among senators of both parties, who would have decided whether to confirm him.

Mr. Trump, in his post announcing that Mr. Ratcliffe would not be his nominee after all, spoke bitterly of the attention that Mr. Ratcliffe’s overstated claims about his experience as a federal prosecutor quickly received from the news media.

“Our great Republican Congressman John Ratcliffe is being treated very unfairly by the LameStream Media,” he wrote.

This morning, Israeli outlets reported that Rep. Ilhan Omar and Rep. Rashida Tlaib would be barred from entering Israel, reportedly due to their “suspected provocations and promotion of BDS” — the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions initiative, which targets the Middle East’s only Democracy. President Trump indicated his support for Israel’s actions, arguing that “[i]t would show great weakness if Israel allowed” the congresswomen to visit.

A number of prominent progressives criticized Israel’s decision. Jennifer Rubin, a left-wing blogger at the Washington Post, argued that Israel was in the wrong, as “[w]eak, fearful countries don’t allow critics in.” Dan Shapiro, the ambassador to Israel under President Obama, suggested that Israel’s volte-face “makes little sense” and that it would “harm Israel’s standing” in America and “boost BDS.”

The progressives are in the wrong, and Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Trump are in the right. Israeli law mandates that Reps. Omar and Tlaib be barred from entering — and given that their itinerary provides no indication of any desire to talk with the Israeli government and understand their perspective, there’s little reason to make an exception for the congresswomen.

In short: if Tlaib and Omar are going to push a boycott on one of America’s most important allies, they shouldn’t be surprised about being boycotted themselves.
