Judge Worried About ‘Flight’ by Indicted Manafort and Gates
by Tracy Connor and Vaughn Hillyard

WASHINGTON — Former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort and his associate Rick Gates — indicted this week on charges ranging from conspiracy to money laundering — will remain on home confinement with GPS monitoring until at least next week.

"I have concerns about flight," U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson said as both men appeared in a Washington courtroom on Thursday afternoon.
[...]
The pair have been on home confinement since their indictment on Monday — Manafort on a $10 million bond and Gates on a $5 million bond. The conditions of their release will be decided at a bail hearing on Monday. They could be tried as early as April.
[...]
Mueller's office calculated the possible maximum sentences under federal sentencing guidelines if the pair are convicted: Gates could serve up to 12 years and seven months in prison, and Manafort is facing up to 15 years and eight months.

Judge proposes May 7 trial date for former Trump aide Manafort (and Gates)
Reuters Staff

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A federal judge on Friday proposed a May 7 trial date for former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and associate Rick Gates, who were indicted on charges including money laundering, according to a court filing.

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson set a Monday hearing to address the proposed trial date in the case, which stemmed from special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into whether Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election.

Manafort, Gates remain under house arrest
By Katelyn Polantz, CNN
Updated 0229 GMT (1029 HKT) November 7, 2017

Washington (CNN) Paul Manafort and Rick Gates will stay under house arrest and GPS monitoring for the time being, a federal judge said Monday.
At a hearing in Washington, Judge Amy Berman Jackson said she won't make a decision on both defendants' bail until she receives more information on their financial situation. Once that information is filed, she proposed that pair remain under GPS monitoring, but be allowed to travel in their local area -- the Washington area for Manafort and Richmond, Virginia, for Gates.
Additionally, she proposed they will be prohibited from being near airports and train stations, and will have evening curfews.

Manafort and Gates will next appear in court on December to discuss a trial date. Jackson has previously proposed May 7, 2018 for the trial to start.
The judge's bond ruling is expected before the December court date.

U.S. judge issues gag order in Manafort-Gates Russia probe case

The federal judge overseeing the criminal trial of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and business partner Rick Gates imposed a gag order Wednesday in the case ordering all parties, including potential witnesses, not to make statements that might prejudice jurors.

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson of Washington issued the order five days after signaling her intention to do so. In a two-page order Wednesday morning, Jackson said she had received no objections by the Tuesday deadline she had set for the parties to weigh in.

Jackson barred any prejudicial statements “to the media or public settings” to safeguard the defendants receiving a fair trial, “and to ensure that the Court has the ability to seat a jury that has not been tainted by pretrial publicity.”

The ruling applied to all participants in the case, including the parties, potential witnesses and attorneys.

Manafort, 68, and Gates, 45, remain under home confinement on pledges to pay $10 million and $5 million, respectively, if they fail to return to court after pleading not guilty Oct. 30 to charges of conspiracy, money laundering and making false lobbyist registration statements in connection with their work advising a Russia-friendly political party in Ukraine.

Rick Gates was indicted with Paul Manafort.....

Lawyers for Rick Gates withdraw from Russia case
By DARREN SAMUELSOHN

Updated 02/01/2018 06:13 PM EST

Three attorneys representing Rick Gates told a federal court Thursday they are immediately withdrawing as counsel for the former Donald Trump campaign aide, who is fighting special counsel Robert Mueller’s indictment of him on money laundering and other charges.

Lawyers Shanlon Wu, Walter Mack and Annemarie McAvoy said in a two-page motion that they would explain the reasons for their abrupt move in documents filed under seal with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

“The document speaks for itself,” McAvoy told POLITICO, declining further comment.

Gates and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort both pleaded not guilty to Mueller’s charges filed in October, the first to be publicly announced in relation to the investigation into whether the Republican presidential campaign colluded with Russia to win the 2016 election.

While Gates’ shift in legal strategy was a surprise, speculation had been mounting that the longtime GOP operative might be seeking to cooperate with the Mueller investigation. CNN reported last month that Gates had added Washington defense attorney Tom Green to his team, noting he’d been spotted at Mueller’s downtown office twice.

Rick Gates, ex-Trump aide and Manafort associate, expected to plead guilty in Russia probe
By CBS News | February 18, 2018, 5:01PM ET

Rick Gates, a former Trump campaign adviser and associate of ex-campaign chairman Paul Manafort, is expected to plead guilty in a deal with special counsel Robert Mueller, according to sources familiar with the negotiations, CBS News' Paula Reid reports. Gates, 45, was indicted by a federal grand jury in October on eight counts including fraud and money laundering as part of the special counsel's probe into ties between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

The revelations of Gates' plea comes after attorneys for Gates requested to withdraw from the case. Reid reports that all of Gates' attorneys-of-record were seeking to withdraw from the case.

Gates had reached the point in his case at which he must decide whether or not to pursue a plea deal. The fact that three experienced trial attorneys wanted off the case suggested at the time that Gates may be pursuing a plea deal. The attorneys remain under a gag order by the court.

Both Manafort and Gates were indicted for money laundering, conspiracy against the U.S. and other charges.

This is a developing story.

• A federal court in Virginia granted the special counsel Robert Mueller's request to dismiss more than 20 charges brought against Rick Gates, the former deputy chairman of Donald Trump's presidential campaign.
• Gates pleaded guilty last week to two counts and is cooperating with the special counsel's office.
• Mueller's decision to drop the charges indicates Gates appears to be in step with the plea deal Gates negotiated last week, but it also indicates Gates most likely has something of significant value to offer the special counsel.

Judge in DC denies Paul Manafort's attempt to have Mueller's charges dismissed, rejecting the argument that the special counsel has overstepped his authority

I THINK this a different case (in DC)... NOT the same as case in Virginia presided over by TS Ellis III?

U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III Eastern District of Virginia, Demanded unredacted copy of Mueller's "scope" document.

THAT is still pending (as a Big Ugly) on Thursday...

Prosecutors From Mueller's Team Accuse Paul Manafort Of Trying To Tamper With Potential Witnesses

Special counsel Robert Mueller's office filed papers late Monday arguing that the judge should reconsider whether Manafort can be free pending trial.

Zoe Tillman, BuzzFeed News Reporter

Special counsel Robert Mueller's office filed papers late Monday accusing Paul Manafort of attempting to tamper with potential witnesses, asking the court to consider changing his release conditions and whether he should be held in jail.

Prosecutors say that after Manafort learned that a grand jury in Washington, DC, had returned a new version of the indictment against him in late February, he attempted to contact individuals connected to his alleged criminal activity "in an effort to secure materially false testimony."

"Manafort’s efforts to influence the testimony of potential witnesses, both directly and through an intermediary, threaten 'the integrity of the trial' even though those efforts have not been violent in nature and the underlying prosecution involves 'white-collar' offenses rather than 'narcotics' or violent crimes," lawyers from the special counsel's office wrote.

Mueller's office has asked the judge to hold a hearing to consider whether Manafort's current terms of release are appropriate, and whether detention is necessary. The government contends that Manafort's actions violated the conditions of release, triggering a "presumption that no conditions or combination of release conditions will assure the safety of the community and of others."

Special counsel indicts Russian, adds charges against Manafort
By Nathan Layne, John Walcott | Reuters | June 8, 2018

(Reuters) - U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller filed charges on Friday against a political operative with alleged ties to Russian intelligence, bringing his probe into possible collusion by the Trump presidential campaign a step closer to the Kremlin’s door.

The indictment, filed by Mueller in District of Columbia federal court, included new counts against Trump’s former campaign chair Paul Manafort and the operative, Manafort aide Konstantin Kilimnik, for tampering with witnesses about their lobbying for Ukraine.

It was the third time Mueller had added to charges against Manafort since he was indicted in October. Manafort has pleaded not guilty to a raft of charges, from money-laundering, to failing to register as a foreign agent, to bank and tax fraud.

And on the Manafort front....

Mueller Must Give Names of 'Foreign Agents' to Manafort

(AP) Tuesday, 12 Jun 2018 11:54 AM

U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller must disclose to Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort the identities of former senior foreign politicians, and others, whom he is accused of causing to act as unregistered foreign agents in the U.S.

Mueller’s prosecutors have until June 15 to reveal the identities of individuals or entities referred to but not named in an indictment accusing Manafort of acting as an unregistered foreign agent of Ukraine and of laundering millions of dollars, a federal judge in Washington ruled Tuesday.

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson granted Manafort’s request for those names but denied his broader bid for a so-called bill of particulars, which would spell out the evidence in greater detail.

Jackson said she found that “the indictment is specific and, that with one minor exception, it suffices to put the defendant on notice of the nature of the charges against him,” Jackson wrote in a five-page ruling. Manafort must “prepare for a complex trial with a voluminous record within a relatively short period of time, and he should not have to be surprised at a later point by the addition of a new name or allegation.”

Mueller Appears to Have Screwed Up by ‘Accidentally’ Exposing Names in Manafort Case
by Matt Naham | 5:17 pm, June 13th, 2018

Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his team have been aggressively pursuing former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, even tacking on new charges of obstruction of justice due to alleged attempted witness tampering.

Although Mueller has been tight-lipped about evidence and witness identification up to this point, his team appears to have screwed up by outing journalists who “produced messages to the FBI” about Manafort’s alleged “coaching up” on lobbying practices. Manafort was indicted in D.C. back in October 2017 for alleged financial fraud and violating lobbying disclosure laws. There’s also a case against him in the Eastern District of Virginia (EDVA).

“Special Counsel accidentally exposed names of former journalists and European politicians allegedly involved in Manafort’s secret Ukraine lobbying. Just filed a new version with redactions,” explained Washington Post reporter Rachel Weiner:

“Unredacted government exhibit showing alleged attempts by Manafort and Kilimnik to influence witness testimonies has been released. The witnesses, journalists […] produced the messages to the FBI,” the Atlantic‘s Natasha Bertrand added.

In a later tweet, Bertrand wrote, “Oh boy. Looks like releasing this unredacted was a mistake–special counsel has just re-filed this and other docs with redactions. (Kilimnik’s name is redacted, too, interestingly.)”

Judge jails ex-Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort ahead of trial
Posted: Jun 16, 2018 3:59 AM

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman is going to jail.

Paul Manafort was ordered into custody Friday after a federal judge revoked his house arrest, citing newly filed obstruction of justice charges. The move by U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson came after prosecutors accused Manafort and a longtime associate of witnesses tampering.

Manafort is the first Trump campaign official to be jailed as part of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation. His attorneys have argued that Manafort didn't do anything wrong and accused prosecutors of conjuring a "sinister plot" out of "innocuous" contacts with witnesses.

Judge denies request by ex-Trump campaign aide to suppress evidence
Sarah N. Lynch, June 22, 2018

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A federal judge on Thursday declined a request by President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort to suppress evidence seized from a storage unit by investigators for Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Manafort, who is currently jailed in Virginia, had argued the evidence was seized improperly after an FBI agent got one of Manafort’s employees to open the storage unit, rather than asking Manafort for permission or seeking a warrant.

But Judge Amy Berman Jackson for the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia rejected that argument, saying, “Law enforcement agents do not need a warrant to enter a location if they have voluntary consent.”

Manafort is facing two indictments in Washington and Virginia arising from Mueller’s investigation into potential collusion between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia. His Washington trial is scheduled for September.

The decision under review, revoking Mr. Manafort’s bail less than 45 days before

because the facility cannot otherwise guarantee his safety. He is locked in his cell
for at least 23 hours per day (excluding visits from his attorneys), at a facility
approximately two hours from his legal team.1

Paul Manafort's lawyers claim Trump is making things worse as they seek to move trial

  • Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort on Wednesday asked a federal judge to move his next trial on charges brought by special counsel Robert Mueller out of a Washington, D.C. court
  • Manafort's lawyers cite the extensive and largely negative publicity the trial has generated, as well as a botched tweet by the president about the case.
  • The request comes a week after Manafort was convicted of eight tax and banking fraud charges after his first trial in Alexandria, Va.

Dan Mangan | Kevin Breuninger
Published 4 Hours Ago Updated 3 Hours Ago

Lawyers for Paul Manafort suggested President Donald Trump is making it harder for his ex-campaign boss to get a fair trial as they asked a judge to move his next case on charges brought by special counsel Robert Mueller out of a Washington, D.C. federal court.

The lawyers cited the extensive and largely negative publicity the trial has generated for Manafort, as well as a botched tweet by the president about the case.

Manafort is asking that the trial on money laundering and other charges, which is due to begin jury selection on Sept. 17, be transferred more than 200 miles away to U.S. District Court in Roanoke, Virginia.

"A fair trial will be impossible without a change of venue to a more neutral and less media saturated locale," Manafort's lawyers argued in the motion, which was made public Wednesday.

His lawyers also said that Manafort has "become an unwilling player in the larger drama between Mr. Mueller and President Trump" — an association made worse by Trump weighing in on the trial.

Trump has repeatedly blasted Mueller's probe into Russian interefence in the 2016 presidential election, and possible collusion by Trump's campaign, as a "witch hunt."

The defense team also noted that nearly 91 percent of the votes cast in the presidential election in D.C. went to Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, with Trump garnering just 4.1 percent of the votes.
