Insults, threats and the Godfather: Feds parade Roger Stone witness tampering evidence

Prosecutors also revealed how frequently Stone was in touch with Trump’s campaign as he bragged about having information on WikiLeaks election-year plans.

The texts and emails came cascading out on Thursday. A visceral insult, a chilling threat, a garbled reference to the mafia. And expletives, so many expletives.

Federal prosecutors unveiled a barrage of evidence against longtime Donald Trump adviser Roger Stone on Thursday as they tried to show that Stone tried to bully an associate to stay silent when a House committee investigating Russia’s 2016 election interference came calling.

It all made for riveting courtroom drama at Stone’s trial for obstruction of Congress, lying and witness tampering as jurors heard all the juicy details from a variety of crude communications between Stone and liberal talk show host Randy Credico — the witness Stone is charged with threatening and trying to silence.

5 takeaways from Roger Stone’s first major day in court

Trump takes it hard, this trial will be rated R and three other observations from the first of what's likely to be many colorful days.

By JOSH GERSTEIN and DARREN SAMUELSOHN

Call it the Cliff Notes version of the Mueller report.

That’s what a new panel of Washington, D.C., jurors heard Wednesday morning as federal prosecutors delivered a tight synopsis of how Roger Stone came to be a defendant in the last indictment to come from the special counsel’s office.

It was a powerful moment delivered exclusively to a courtroom audience. Anyone who’s been following Robert Mueller’s work closely would recognize all the pieces of the story. But to the 12 jurors who might be coming in cold, it was a stark and concise opening narrative explaining how the colorful characters in Trumpworld gossiped and plotted around Russia’s digital thefts of Democratic emails during the 2016 election — and the role Stone played in that story.

The longtime Donald Trump associate is facing charges that he lied to congressional investigators trying to untangle the complex web of Russia’s election meddling. Prosecutors say Stone also tampered with a witness in that probe.

Steve Bannon Reluctantly Testifies in Roger Stone's Trial
By ASHRAF KHALIL / AP November 8, 2019

(WASHINGTON) — Steve Bannon appeared as a reluctant witness Friday in the federal criminal trial of political operative Roger Stone.

Bannon said he had been given a subpoena to testify against Stone and otherwise would not have come as he took the stand at the federal court in Washington.

Stone is being tried on charges of witness tampering and lying to Congress about his attempts to contacts WikiLeaks about damaging material during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Bannon testified that Stone “implied that he had a connection with WikiLeaks” but never stated it directly.

His testimony came after comedian and radio talk show Randy Creidco told jurors that Stone pressured him into backing up lies he told Congress, threatening to take away his dog at one point.

Randy Credico said Stone pressed him to “go along” with a false account of the operative’s contacts with WikiLeaks during the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign.

Roger Stone Convicted on All Seven Counts – Sentencing in February..up to 50 years?

Guilty on all counts: Roger Stone, longtime Trump confidant, convicted of lying, obstruction, and intimidation
by Jerry Dunleavy
November 15, 2019 11:48 AM, Updated Nov 15, 2019, 12:19 PM

Roger Stone, the longtime Republican operative, flamboyant "dirty trickster," and President Trump ally, lied to Congress, obstructed an investigation, and intimidated a witness, a jury found Friday.

He was found guilty on five separate counts of lying to the House Intelligence Committee in addition to two more charges of obstructing a congressional investigation and intimidating a witness following a two-week trial that centered on the actions taken by the self-identified "dirty trickster" and GOP agent provocateur during the 2016 election and beyond.

Stone, 67, now faces up to 50 years in prison, a maximum of 20 alone for the most serious charge. Judge Amy Berman Jackson, who has presided over the case since January, will hand down Stone's sentence in February.

The jury found Stone repeatedly misrepresented and concealed his 2016 attempt at collaborating with WikiLeaks and founder Julian Assange to obtain dirt on then-candidate Hillary Clinton and stolen emails when speaking with Trump-Russia investigators from the House Intelligence Committee in a spin-off case from special counsel Robert Mueller’s two-year investigation.

The charges against Stone included one count he “corruptly influenced, obstructed, and impeded” the congressional investigation and another that he attempted to “corruptly persuade” Randy Credico’s congressional testimony. Stone also faced five counts of making “materially false, fictions, and fraudulent statements” to Congress.

After the jury handed down its verdict, Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron Zelinsky argued that Stone should be held in prison for the next few months pending his official prison sentence.

Stone had demonstrated an “unwillingness or inability to abide by the conditions of release,” Zelinsky said, referencing discussions Stone reportedly had with InfoWars conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, who claimed Thursday evening that Stone had called him on Thursday and asked him to deliver a message.

“It’s Roger Stone’s request that if he’s convicted you call the White House,” Jones said, adding that if Stone was found guilty, his listeners should “encircle the White House with bullhorns demanding that President Trump take action.”

Stone’s attorney, Bruce Rogow, claimed to not know whether what Jones had said was true, but argued that during the course of the trial, Stone “has complied with everything has been required of him.”

The judge noted that Stone’s communications with Jones, if true, likely violated the gag order that she’d placed on him. But she said she would not keep him in custody, and she had “no reason to believe he won’t be here for his next court appearance.”

The gag order, which prevents him from speaking to the media about his case or posting on social media, is in place through February.

Still Standing with Michael Caputo - Stone on Trial (Ep.51)

Caputo, booted from Stone trial, alleges threat from U.S. marshal

WASHINGTON – Michael R. Caputo of East Aurora sat for two weeks as his best friend, Roger Stone, went on trial on felony charges of perjury and witness tampering.

But when the federal jury convicted Stone on all counts Friday, Caputo quickly showed his displeasure – and got into a scrape with a U.S. marshal as a result.

After the verdict, Caputo refused to stand in respect for the jury, as is customary. Told by a U.S. marshal that he had to do so, Caputo stood – and turned his back on the jury.

"I decided to do something to show my displeasure without disrupting the proceedings," Caputo said afterward.

A U.S. marshal then ordered Caputo out of the courtroom, handing the Republican political consultant off to another federal agent.

That's when, according to Caputo, things got uncomfortable.

To hear Caputo tell it, the marshal then said: "That can be arranged."

Caputo took that as a death threat.

"Must I fear the @USMarshalsHQ?" he said on Twitter.

Afterward, Caputo said he was contemplating filing a complaint or contacting a lawyer about the marshal's actions.

"From my perspective, at the least it's completely unprofessional," Caputo said. "And at the worst, it's truly frightening."

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Marshals Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Caputo's tweet.

Roger Stone jury pool....

Image

I think there is a legitimate case to be made for CHANGE OF VENUE for cases like this. Certainly if and when there are any Trials of Deep State Coup criminals.
It is not unusual to seak a change of venue where a jurisdiction may have a biased jury pool.. and these "political cases" obviously meet that standard.

In a 12-minute conference call with the defense and prosecution teams on Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson said she will still hand down Stone's sentence at Thursday's hearing, but indicated she plans to defer the execution of the sentence until the court addresses Stone's request for a new trial.

"I'm willing to make sure that there are no consequences that flow from the announcement of what the sentencing will be," Jackson said on the call, which was broadcast in the courtroom.

Here’s What The Lead Roger Stone Juror Wrote In Her Jury Questionnaire
Chuck Ross
February 24, 2020 11:05 AM ET

  • The lead juror at Roger Stone’s trial said in a written questionnaire that she was “not sure” whether she posted online about the Russia investigation, though her Twitter feed shows that she posted multiple stories about the probe.
  • Tomeka Hart’s responses on the jury questionnaire, a portion of which was obtained by the DCNF, are at the heart of Stone’s request for a retrial. Stone was sentenced to 40 months in prison last week.
  • Stone alleges that Hart, a former Democratic congressional candidate, withheld information during the jury selection process regarding her views of Stone and President Trump.

Judge won’t bow out of Roger Stone case

Amy Berman Jackson accuses the defense of abusing the court’s docket with claims of bias.

By JOSH GERSTEIN
02/23/2020 07:38 PM EST

The federal judge who sentenced President Donald Trump's longtime adviser Roger Stone to more than three years in prison last week has decisively rejected a defense request that she drop off the case before ruling on a pending new trial motion challenging the conduct of a juror at his trial.

U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson's sharply worded order also dressed down Stone's defense team for using the court's docket to air what she said were meritless claims that she is biased against him.

Stone ordered to report to prison July 14, as judge denies request for two-month delay
Tim Elfrink, The Washington Post Published 6:55 pm EDT, Friday, June 26, 2020

WASHINGTON - A federal judge has ordered Roger Stone to report to prison July 14, granting him a two-week delay because of the coronavirus pandemic, but not the two months that President Donald Trump's confidant had requested with prosecutors' assent.

Stone, 67, had been due to surrender June 30 to a federal prison in Jesup, Ga., while he appeals his November conviction for lying and witness tampering in a congressional investigation.

In an order and sealed opinion late Friday, U.S. District Amy Berman Jackson granted a two-week delay. Prosecutors had not opposed Stone's request for a delay until Sept. 3, saying the Justice Department's policy during the pandemic has been to grant up to a 60-day extension upon defendants' request "without respect to age, health, or other covid-19 risk factors."

In a short public notice, Jackson said she agreed to a two-week extension based on reasoning explained in a sealed opinion, which she asked if both sides would agree to unseal next week.

"This affords the defendant seventy-five days beyond his original report date," Jackson added in the notice, noting she originally ordered Stone to surrender to prison within two weeks after she denied his motion for a new trial in mid-April.

Jackson also allowed Stone to remain under home confinement until then, in according with Justice Department policy and "the strong medical recommendation submitted" by his defense. Jackson's notice indicated that would allow Stone time to quarantine so as not to bring virus from South Florida into prison.
