Demographic makeup of the jury pool (i.e. of Zimmerman's peers):

11% black
17% Hispanic
51% female

So, statistically speaking, the jury should have, on average, one Hispanic, less than one black, and the rest white; it should be evenly split on gender, 3/3 male/female.

The bigots complain that the jury has one black-Hispanic (that they insist on referring to as only Hispanic), but have no apparent qualms about an all-female jury?

(Is it even worth pointing out that juries are constitutionally required to consist of peers of the accused, and not of the deceased? So it would be far more troubling had the jury included one black person, and no Hispanics - though I have no doubt the same bigots would be complaining about the jury only having one black person.)

As the sidebar was going on, I had to look back at a comment from John:

The fact that Owen had to call the Russian company to ask questions about the software demonstrates that Owen is not qualified to testify (1) as an expert on the algorithms and methods employed by the software (2) whether or not those algorithms and methods are properly applied to the data set in the present case (3) the effect of using duplicated data to meet minimum sample size requirement (4) the effect of comparing screams to speech (5) whether or not any of the foregoing is generally accepted by the relevant scientific community and (6) why or why not.

Nutshell: an expert qualified to testify as to (1) thru (6) needs to have knowledge of the algorithms, methodology,and high level math employed by the software and the associated statistical theories and error analysis. Owen lacks all of these qualifications, as evidenced by the spectacle of watching the defense Phds testify vs the state’s history major.

Owen is not even qualified to testify as to those issues. In a competent court, the defense would request voire dire as to Owen’s lack of qualifications, shred Owen, and the judge would refuse to further waste the court’s time in permitting him to testify.
