Zimmerman defense team offers insights to panel at UB-sponsored mock trial event
By James Staas | News Staff Reporter
on November 7, 2013 - 7:41 PM

Two lawyers who represented defendant George Zimmerman in the high-profile Trayvon Martin murder trial talked Thursday about their trial techniques and strategies that helped lead to an acquittal.

Attorneys Mark O’Mara, who was Zimmerman’s lead counsel, and Don West, a 1980 graduate of the University at Buffalo Law School, discussed the Florida case before about 250 law students at a panel discussion as part of the 10th annual Buffalo Niagara Trial Competition.

West may be best remembered for the knock-knock joke that fell flat with jurors during his opening statement. But O’Mara credited West for his work in persuading the judge not to allow the jury to consider a lesser murder charge.

A key moment came near the end of the trial when both sides suggested what the judge should include in her instructions to jurors before deliberations. Prosecutors for the first time suggested that the judge allow jurors to consider the less serious charges of manslaughter and third-degree murder based on child abuse, arguing that since Trayvon was 17 when Zimmerman fatally shot him during a confrontation, he was a minor, or child.

“It was a brilliant strategy to give the jury something to hang their hat on,” offering jurors a compromise verdict if they couldn’t convict Zimmerman of murder, West said.

“It was the ultimate in sandbagging,” he said of the last-minute prosecution strategy in the case.

West argued against it, and “the court ultimately did the right thing” in rejecting it, he said.

“That saved the case,” West said.

“We wanted to avoid a compromise verdict,” O’Mara said.

O’Mara recalled West’s outrage at the prosecution’s move.

Spike Lee sued over George Zimmerman tweet
Legal action is being taken against the director by an elderly couple whose address Lee wrongly tweeted as being the home of Trayvon Martin killer George Zimmerman
Ben Child the Guardian
Tuesday 12 November 2013 12.04 GMT

The film director Spike Lee is the subject of legal action by an elderly American couple whose home he wrongly identified as the residence of Trayvon Martin killer George Zimmerman.

In the lawsuit, plaintiffs Elaine McClain and David McClain say Lee's post on Twitter led to ongoing hate mail, threatening phone calls and an unwanted media presence at their Florida home. While the McClains initially agreed an out of court settlement with the director of Do the Right Thing and Jungle Fever, they were subsequently targeted all over again in the wake of Zimmerman's trial and acquittal when Lee's post to his 240,000 followers began to be widely retweeted.

The director initially wrote: "I don't give a fuck what you think kill that Bitch. HERE GO HIS ADDRESS, LET THE HUNGER GAMES BEGIN."

"While defendant intended to post the home address of George Zimmerman, he actually posted the address of plaintiffs Elaine McClain and David McClain," the suit reads.

The McClains are now seeking "in excess" of $15,000 (£9,500) in damages.

So...looks like they got the video from the iPad and believe it or not the police are going to release the video to the media tomorrow. How is this even close to legal? It is bad enough that the media has lost all integrity, but the fact that the police are aiding them is just insane.

They can't help but to stir the Zimmerman Pot. If it brings in viewers, it adds revenue. Money is the name of the game.

It is a shame. It has been quiet for the last month and a half. Zimmerman got Justice but he won't have peace for years.

ETA: It would be nice if it backed up GZ's narrative. All in all that was still a family dispute.

So now WTMZ aka Click Orlando, says, oops we might have been wrong and the police said they can't get the video off. Funny thing is they are claiming the police were wrong not their source. Lol.

The moderator over there deleted my post raking them over the coals for their shoddy reporting. I think it is time to start taking screen shots of their original stories and their edits and exposing their lack of ethics. We really need laws to reign in these so called news organizations. They have lost any resemblance to the journalists of old.

Lake Mary police: We don't have enough evidence to prosecute George Zimmerman
The Secret Service couldn't salvage video from his wife's broken iPad.
By Rene Stutzman, Orlando Sentinel
5:50 p.m. EST, November 14, 2013

Lake Mary police on Thursday announced that they could not salvage video from an iPad George Zimmerman tore up during a dispute with his estranged wife and thus he will face no domestic violence charges.

Considering that Shellie knew where George was up through September 9th, I'd say Stutzman got use of the plural of month in just under the wire.

Eric Holder Promises Decision Soon In George Zimmerman Civil Rights Case
11/19/13 06:44 PM ET EST AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Eric Holder says the Justice Department will soon announce a decision on whether to file civil rights charges against George Zimmerman in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin.

The death of the unarmed 17-year-old in Florida touched off a national debate about race.

The Washington Post reported Holder's comments, which were confirmed by Justice Department spokesman Brian Fallon.

Holder says the civil rights investigation into Martin's death will be completed relatively soon and that the Justice Department will issue a report about its deliberations. Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter.

Surely this little bit of stupidity can not be dragged out for much longer?

It already came out in a Senate? Hearing on SYG that there were no charges?

And it made no sense at all from the outset. FBI found no evidence of Racism in GZ case.

Prog Manipulative Liberalism On Parade – Shellie Zimmerman Talks To Katie Couric

Posted on November 21, 2013 by sundance

First off, it’s Katie Couric, OK. That should be a big enough flashy sign ! But the gag-a-maggot obfuscation, condescension, manipulation and sheer prog smarminess in this video is enough to require auto computer disconnect technology hooked up to a blood pressure cuff.

But if you dare to watch it keep a barf bag handy and put away all sharp or movable objects first.

YOU’VE BEEN WARNED !

Shelly Zimmerman's "Narcissist in Me" tour - First Stop, Katie Couric
Re-News It - Rewinding the Rhetoric
Friday, November 22, 2013

Shelly Zimmerman
, for whatever reason...is on a "poor me" tour. Katie Couric is her first stop. What I find very unsettling about this interview is how much the incident which happened only two days prior to the recording of this show, is incorporated into their dialogue. Couric refers to the domestic violence incident between Samantha Schiebe and George Zimmerman many times to prove a point about his run-in's with the law and his (alleged), propensity for violence.

Zimmerman's not-guilty verdict comes with 'mind-numbing' $2.5M bill
By Rene Stutzman and Jeff Weiner, Orlando Sentinel
November 29, 2013

George Zimmerman was acquitted at his racially charged murder trial in July. He won but at a very steep cost.

Two months ago, he received a $2.5 million bill from his two lead attorneys, Mark O'Mara and Don West.

They had kept track of the time they worked on the case. Each billed him for about 3,000 hours, according to O'Mara.
[...]
O'Mara told CNN's Anderson Cooper last week that he hopes Zimmerman will get some money from a defamation suit he filed against NBCUniversal Media LLC. That case was put on hold in March, when both sides agreed to await the outcome of the murder trial.

There are no signs that it is moving forward again.
