Judge rebuffs Peterson prosecutors on hearsay
MICHAEL TARM, Associated Press
Thursday, July 19, 2012

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — The judge overseeing the Drew Peterson murder trial that starts next week refused a request by prosecutors Wednesday for him to immediately rule on whether he will admit certain hearsay statements — appearing to leave open the possibility of barring at least some of that evidence, which could be central to their case.

SNEED: Missing Stacy Peterson on witness list for Drew Peterson murder trial
By MICHAEL SNEED Chicago Sun Times
July 20, 2012

It’s a shocker!

Sneed has learned the name of Stacy Peterson, the missing fourth wife of accused wife murderer Drew Peterson, is on a witness list to potentially appear in the murder trial this month of Peterson’s third wife, Kathleen Savio.

Stacy Peterson was married to Drew Peterson in 2004, when Savio’s body was found in a bathtub in the second floor master bedroom of her Bolingbrook home.

Experts: 3-year-old Drew Peterson jury pool unusual, could lead to complications
BY JON SEIDEL Chicago Sun Times
July 19, 2012 5:15PM

Lawyers next week are scheduled to engage in the final formality standing between Drew Peterson and his long-awaited murder trial — jury selection.

The 12 people who could decide whether Peterson murdered third wife Kathleen Savio will soon be chosen. And for more than 200 Will County residents it’s been a long time coming.

They’ve lived under a judge’s order since August 2009 not to follow news of what could be the most high-profile case in Will County’s history. Defense lawyers tried to convince the judge to pick from a new group, arguing no Illinois jury pool has ever been on hold for as long as Peterson’s.

Andrea Lyon, a DePaul University law professor and former attorney for accused Florida daughter killer Casey Anthony, said the use of such an old jury pool invites a reversal in the case by an appellate court. But Neil Adams, a criminal defense attorney who spent 10 years as a Will County prosecutor, sums up the old pool as just another quirk in Peterson’s already bizarre five-year legal saga.

“It’s odd,” Adams said. “But this is an odd case.”

The names to know in the Drew Peterson trial
BY JON SEIDEL Sun-Times Media
July 20, 2012 4:42PM

Drew Peterson: Former Bolingbrook cop. Media sensation. Accused of killing his third wife. Peterson’s life hasn’t been the same since his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, disappeared in 2007. That’s when prosecutors started asking questions about the 2004 drowning death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, previously ruled an accident. Peterson fed national media interest with wisecracks and bizarre behavior. He was arrested and was indicted in Savio’s murder in May 2009, and he has been held at the Will County Jail ever since.

Kathleen Savio: Drew Peterson’s third wife and his alleged murder victim. They had two children together but became embroiled in a bitter divorce after she learned her husband was cheating. She was found dead in a dry bathtub in her Bolingbrook home in March 2004. Authorities initially ruled her death an accident — they said she slipped, fell and drowned, and they say water from the bathtub leaked through the seal while she lay there. But prosecutors had her body exhumed after Stacy Peterson disappeared in 2007. Her body was autopsied for a second time and her death was ruled a homicide.

Stacy Peterson: The former Stacy Cales met Drew Peterson while working as a clerk at a Bolingbrook hotel. She was 17. He was 47 and married to Kathleen Savio. They married in 2003 and had two children together, but Stacy mysteriously vanished on Oct. 28, 2007, the day she was supposed to go to her brother’s house to paint. She hasn’t been seen since and is presumed dead. Police have said Drew Peterson is the prime suspect in her disappearance.

Judge Edward Burmila: A former prosecutor and criminal defense attorney. He was Will County’s state’s attorney’s from 1988 until 1992, when he lost his bid for re-election to James Glasgow, the current state’s attorney. He has represented clients facing the most serious of criminal charges as a defense attorney and became an associate judge in 2003. He took over the Drew Peterson case in May at the end of its long appeal process. Peterson’s last judge, Stephen White, retired in 2010. Burmila is a graduate of DePaul University College of Law.

Joel Brodsky: The brash, aggressive leader of Drew Peterson’s defense team is a lifelong Chicagoan who rarely avoids TV cameras. He has tried felony and misdemeanor criminal cases and represented clients in state and federal courts. He graduated from DePaul University College of Law.

Joseph “The Shark” Lopez: He’s the fashionable, quick-witted lawyer who represented Frank Calabrese Sr. in the Family Secrets mob trial of 2007. He has been practicing law since the early 1980s and has represented clients in dozens of murder trials. He’s expected to give the defense team’s closing arguments. He graduated from Chicago-Kent College of Law.

Steven Greenberg: Greenberg claims an “unequaled record of acquittals” during his more than 25 years as a criminal defense attorney in state and federal courts, and he’s a regular guest on the cable news networks expected to cover the Peterson trial. He’s a graduate of Northern Illinois University College of Law.

Darryl Goldberg: A Chicago-based lawyer who promises clients “zealous representation” for major crimes, including drug, conspiracy, murder, white-collar and sex crimes. He’s a graduate of the Chicago-Kent College of Law.

Ralph Meczyk: Lawyer for Anthony Doyle, another defendant in the Family Secrets mob trial of 2007. He has tried more than 150 cases in state and federal courts and had been certified by the Illinois Supreme Court to defend clients facing the death penalty. He also has argued before the U.S. Supreme Court and is a graduate of the Chicago-Kent College of Law.

Lisa Lopez: The wife of Joseph Lopez was licensed to practice law in Illinois in 2010 but already has experience with high-profile cases, having helped out at the 2007 Family Secrets trial. She’s the second vice president of the Women’s Criminal Defense Bar Association. She’s a graduate of John Marshall Law School in Chicago.

James Glasgow: Will County State’s Attorney: Glasgow is serving his fourth term as Will County’s elected state’s attorney. He succeeded Burmila in the office in 1992, served until 2000 and returned in 2004. He has prosecuted felony criminal cases ranging from retail theft to murder, secured three death-penalty convictions and leads the prosecution of Drew Peterson. He’s a graduate of Northern Illinois College of Law. He has been practicing law since 1981.

Kathleen Patton: Assistant State’s Attorney: Glasgow’s criminal division chief. She directs more than 50 assistant state’s attorneys who prosecute roughly 3,000 new felony cases and more than 4,000 misdemeanor cases each year. In one notable prosecution, Patton secured a conviction and an eight-year prison sentence against a local fire chief and his wife who stole more than $100,000 from the accounts of an elderly woman they had befriended. She’s a graduate of Valparaiso University Law School.

John Connor: Assistant State’s Attorney: Connor spearheaded Glasgow’s grand-jury investigation into the disappearance of Stacy Peterson and the murder of Kathleen Savio. He has been a prosecutor for the past 14 years and helped launch the state’s attorney’s Major Crimes Prosecution Unit and its Computer Crimes Prosecution Unit, specializing in criminal cases that involve digital evidence. He’s a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law

Drew Peterson Heads to Trial in Third Wife's Death
By DON BABWIN Associated Press
CHICAGO July 21, 2012 (AP)

For a man whose fourth wife had just disappeared, Drew Peterson didn't sound the least bit worried. He seemed almost gleeful, suggesting that she had run off with another man and that all her threats of divorce coincided with her menstrual cycle.

My conversation with Drew Peterson
By Michael Christian
Thu July 19, 2012

NEED TO KNOW

* In Session's Michael Christian talks to alleged killer in court
* Restrained by shackles, Peterson is friendly to court staff
* Peterson describes case as a 'joke,' accuses media of bias

I recently found myself in a Joliet, Illinois, courtroom talking with accused killer Drew Peterson in a surreal moment that happened almost eight years after Kathleen Savio was discovered dead in the bathtub of her home -- and two years after her former husband, Peterson, was originally scheduled to stand trial for her death.

"I'm Mr. Peterson," Drew Greets Jurors
Drew introduces himself to the 200-person jury pool

By Michael Tarm
Monday, Jul 23, 2012
Updated 6:28 PM CDT

Drew Peterson introduced himself to would-be jurors Monday as jury selection began in the former suburban Chicago police officer's long-delayed murder trial.

Peterson, 58, is charged with killing his third wife, Kathleen Savio, in 2004. Her body was found in a dry bathtub in her home, her hair soaked with blood. The ex-Bolingbrook police sergeant also is a suspect in the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, although he has not been charged.

Peterson, his trademark mustache shaved off, stood and spoke to some 40 potential jurors as proceedings began Monday.

"Good morning ladies and gentlemen, I'm Mr. Peterson," he said in a steady voice.

During the trial, jurors are likely to hear statements the women allegedly made to friends and relatives about threats Peterson made. Such hearsay is usually barred, but an appellate court ruled jurors can hear the statements.

The 200-person jury pool has been waiting three years for a trial to get under way. It was put off because of appellate court battles over the hearsay statements.

"I've never heard of anything comparable to this — a jury pool waiting around for so long knowing what case they're going to be in and the reliance on hearsay," said Gal Pissetzky, a Chicago defense lawyer with no link to the case.

Lawyers finish questioning a batch of potential Drew Peterson jurors
BY JON SEIDEL AND DAN ROZEK
Staff Reporters July 23, 2012

A few saw the movie. A couple peeked at the headlines — they couldn’t help it.

But most members of Drew Peterson’s potential jury pool said they could be fair to the former Bolingbrook police sergeant finally going on trial on charges he murdered his third wife, 40-year-old Kathleen Savio.

Lawyers questioned them slowly, and into the night. Dinner arrived around 7 p.m., and questioning of Monday’s pool of jurors wrapped up not long after. After a break, Burmila and the attorneys were to start dissecting the day’s proceedings, possibly starting the process of selecting jurors from among Monday’s group.

The judge hopes to have about 40 potential jurors out of the 200-member jury pool questioned each day of this week. They were students, retirees, divorcees, immigrants, carpenters, cops and veterans. Some have had run-ins with the law.
