When Pistorius raced against a horse



The court has adjourned for lunch.

There are 70 pages of charitable work done by Oscar Pistorius to go through.

The evidence, being read out by his long-time manager Peet van Zyl is painting the picture of a star would devoted much of time to supporting good causes.

Before the shooting of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius was one of the hottest properties in the sporting world, in demand for charity work and by big firms for advertising.

At one point van Zyl mentioned the time Pistorius raced against a horse to raise awareness of disability sport in the region.

Hearing continues with evidence from Peet van Zyl

Oscar Pistorius' long-time manager Peet van Zyl is continuing to give evidence of his client's extensive charitable work.

Before lunch, van Zyl had mentioned his support for good causes both in South Africa and globally.

He named-dropped Sebastian Coe and Sir Bobby Charlton among a list of VIPs that have requested Pistorius' help for charity events.

Van Zyl has again mentioned Pistorius' support for the work of the British Leonard Cheshire disability charity.

He said that on one occasion when visiting Italy a young girl was so excited about seeing Pistorius that she "bit him."

Court is stood down until tomorrow

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel asks for the sentencing to be stood down until tomorrow so that he can go through the defence papers.

Defence lawyer Barry Roux state that he made the papers available to the court ahead of today's hearing.

Judge Thokozile Matilda Masipa has stood the sentencing down for the day.

It is due to resume tomorrow morning at 8.30am UK time.

"It's a matter of course for high profile sportsmen to be involved in charitable work," says Gerrie Nel.

Mr Pistorius was always "energetic" about his charitable work, says van Zyl.

Adults and children were often "in awe" of him, he says.

He elaborates a bit more about how Oscar was very "enthused" about his charity work and the positive impact it had.

And with that, Roux is finished with Van Zyl and he steps down.

We're now hearing from probation officer Annette Vergeer.

Her image can't be broadcast.

She has compiled a report about Pistorius for the hearing.

Roux has her explain that she is "objective and neutral".

Vergeer is finished speaking to Roux and Gerrie Nel is going to get a run at her now.

Nel says although she was previously employed by the state, she is now being paid by the defence and is a privately-employed individual.

He clarifies she has spent some time "with the defence" and has consulted with Pistorius twice.

We're back up and running, and as expected Nel is taking issue with Vergeer's assertion that Pistorius has been paying the Steenkamp family compensation.

She says she was told this by the Pistorius legal team.

Vergeer says she thought Pistorius sold his car and asked that money be given to lawyers for Reeva's parents if they wanted it.

However she now admits she was told Reeva's parents rejected R370000 from Oscar.

Yet she didn't alter her report?

Nel asking why she didn't change this.

Vergeer unwilling to concede any ground on Pistorius' possible vulnerability in jail.

"No matter what he won't be able to stand up for himself," she says.

And with that, Nel asks to adjourn for the day.
