Oscar Pistorius will serve half his six-year prison sentence for murdering Reeva Steenkamp before applying for parole
Aislinn Laing
6 July 2016

Oscar Pistorius has been sent back to prison for murdering girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp but is expected to be released on parole in as little as three years.

The athlete has already served 12 months in jail for the fatal shooting but was sent back to prison after South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal upgraded his conviction from manslaughter to murder.

Stand by for more vindictive Nel.....

The state has 14 days to appeal the sentence and is expected to bar any intervention from Steenkamp’s family. A prosecution source previously told The Telegraph that for them the “worst-case scenario” would be 10 years.

I read a dozen different articles ... there's no time-frame for decision on appeal. I'm assuming Roux will file papers, if permission is granted to the State, then it will be argued before the court. I'm guessing. What a shame.

South African prosecutors seek longer prison term for Pistorius
By Herald and News | July 21, 2016

JOHANNESBURG (TNS) — South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority wants permission to appeal the six-year prison sentence handed to athlete Oscar Pistorius for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, describing it as “shockingly too lenient.”

[...]The NPA on Thursday filed the application for permission to appeal the sentence at the Pretoria court where Pistorius was sentenced.

“We hope that this appeal will also clarify further the principles of sentencing, particularly in crime categories for which there are prescribed minimum sentences ordained by legislation,” the statement said.

Reeva Steenkamp’s parents welcomed the planned appeal, saying they had always supported prosecutor Gerrie Nel’s “fight for justice for Reeva” and would now devote their energy to a new foundation in their daughter’s name to help fight domestic abuse.

I am disgusted with Nel and the SA justice system already..... and Nel still wont stop.

There is true evil on display in this case.. and it's certainly NOT OP... he has been punished more than enough already.

As we've seen, the waiting and stress during this drawn out post-sentencing litigation has worn on OP. I am hoping the mitigating factors that the Judge cited for sentencing him to less than the minimum will hold up at the appeal level. I know nothing about the law there, but the appeals judge should not only deny the State's appeal but give OP less time. Enough already.

Pistorius treated at South African hospital; back to jail
By CHRISTOPHER TORCHIA | Associated Press | August 7, 2016

JOHANNESBURG — Oscar Pistorius was treated for minor wrist injuries at a hospital and has been returned to a South African jail where the Olympian is serving a six-year sentence for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, prison officials said Sunday.

The report of injuries to Pistorius, who denied he had attempted suicide, came as athletes compete at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Pistorius, known as "Blade Runner" for his carbon-fiber running blades, gained worldwide fame when he ran against able-bodied athletes at the 2012 London Olympics, the first amputee runner to compete at the games.

Pistorius told officials that he suffered the injuries after falling out of bed, said Singabakho Nxumalo, a spokesman for the South Africa's correctional services department.

The former track star was initially treated by medical staff at the Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria, and then transferred to Kalafong hospital, said Manelisi Wolela, another official at the department. Pistorius was returned to his cell on Saturday, and an investigation is underway.

"Oscar Pistorius denied speculations of a suicide attempt," Wolela said in a text message to media.

"As a policy principle, we cannot further discuss a particular offender's personal condition in the public domain," he said.
[...]
Pistorius and his longtime coach, Ampie Louw, said before Steenkamp's killing that they wanted to retire together at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Such a shame all around. When Oscar works up the nerve to cut through his wrists to his views, Nel can look in the mirror and know what his fantastical vindictiveness has done.

Inside sources also told the newspaper that razor blades were found in the disgraced athlete's cell last Saturday afternoon, and that his wrist injuries, described as 'severe', were self-inflicted.

19 October 2018 - By Nonkululeko Njilo

Convicted murderer and Paralympian Oscar Pistorius learnt on Friday that his 101-year-old grandfather had died and did not take the news well.

The family confirmed that Hendrik Pistorius had died in the early hours of Friday.

One of Hendrik’s 23 grandsons‚ who asked not to be named so as not to betray the family’s trust‚ said Oscar had been upset because he had fond memories of his grandfather.

Latest report on Oscar I can find....

Convicted murderer turned spiritual leader: Pistorius now running Bible studies in prison
2018-12-28 12:42

Former Paralympian and convicted murderer Oscar Pistorius has found a new purpose behind bars, leading a Bible studies and prayer group and harvesting vegetables, his father Henke has told The Times UK.

Pistorius was convicted of the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on February 14, 2013.

He was sentenced in July 2016 to six years in prison for murder, even though the prosecution had called for a minimum prison sentence for murder, which is 15 years behind bars.

News24 previously reported that the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in Bloemfontein increased his sentence to 13 years in November 2017.

This takes into account the time he had already served behind bars.

This December marked the second Christmas that Pistorius has spent behind bars. He still has to serve another five years before he is eligible for parole in 2023.

According to his father, Pistorius is doing well in prison and has been in a better place since his conviction.

Pistorius' father said his son was having a positive spiritual impact on his fellow inmates, and that he also had his own garden inside the prison.

In the meantime, he was set on serving other inmates, providing them with good Christian knowledge, and offering hope to those who need it, his father said.

Henke Pistorius told The Times UK that Oscar "is making a difference to others who really needed a difference to be made".

"As a result, things have also improved for him."

Earlier this year, in April, the Constitutional Court dismissed Pistorius' leave to appeal his 13-year sentence, which was welcomed by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

Oscar Pistorius becomes a spiritual leader in South African prison teaching ‘hardcore’ inmates about the Bible

  • Oscar Pistorius, 32, is in prison for the murder of girlfriend Reva Steenkamp, 29
  • His father Henke Pistorius claims his son has become the leader of a Bible group
  • According to Mr Pistorius he teaches several inmates within the study sessions

Oscar Pistorius has become a spiritual leader and is converting inmates at his South African prison - his father has revealed.

The former Paralympic gold medallist, who is serving a life sentence for the 2013 murder of his model girlfriend Reva Steenkamp, 29, is now the leader of a bible group at the Atteridgeville correctional centre in Pretoria.

Henke Pistorius told the Times that his son had 'always been a child of God' and was 'making a difference to others' within the prison walls.
