Paul O'Neal shooting: protest planned at Chicago park
By AP in Chicago | The Guardian | August 6, 2016

Activists asked to move rally amid festival tied to unveiling of Martin Luther King memorial at site where civil rights leader called for fair housing.

Protesters planned on Saturday to gather at a Chicago park where 50 years ago Martin Luther King Jr called for fair housing, to protest the police shooting that killed Paul O’Neal, a black 18-year-old, last month [July 28, 2016].

Nine videos released on Friday showed Chicago police firing repeatedly at a stolen car driven by O’Neal as it careened down the street away from them. The shots were an apparent violation of departmental policy, which explicitly prevents officers from firing at moving vehicles.

O’Neal was handcuffed after being shot, after a chaotic foot chase through a residential neighborhood. The footage also showed that officers claimed he had fired on them – he was unarmed – and called the black teenager a “bitch ass motherfucker” as he lay dying from a gunshot wound.

The fatal shooting was not captured on camera, as police said the officer who fired was wearing a body camera that did not record the incident. A police spokesman said on Monday an investigation was under way into why the camera did not work. Authorities did not believe the officer intentionally turned off the camera.

The Chicago police superintendent, Eddie Johnson, has stripped three of the officers involved of their police powers after a preliminary investigation concluded they had violated department policy. Johnson promised on Friday that if the as yet unidentified officers were found to have acted improperly, they would “be held accountable for their actions”.

Two officers wounded, suspect and bystander killed in wild Philadelphia gun melee
BY Chris Sommerfeldt

A gun-toting madman and an innocent bystander were fatally shot during a chaotic West Philadelphia shootout that also left two cops and three civilians wounded Friday evening, authorities said.

The unidentified shooter walked up to Sgt. Sylvia Young’s squad car in the Walnut Hill neighborhood around 11:20 p.m. and shot her as many as eight times through an open window.

Young, a 19-year department veteran, miraculously survived thanks to her protective vest and was listed in stable condition at an area hospital, according to Police Commissioner Richard Ross.

Ross said a note believed to be written by the shooter was recovered near Young’s car. The twisted letter allegedly contained rambling anti-police rhetoric and even named a parole officer as a specific target.

We have a Terence Crutcher and Alston Sterling - now we have a Terrance Sterling. This death is ruled a homicide.
Large protests happening now in DC.
This is the most recent article I could find.

Terrence Sterling Was Shot in Back, Neck, Medical Examiner Says
By NBC Washington | September 28, 2016

The motorcyclist killed this month by a D.C. police officer suffered gunshot wounds to the back and neck, the D.C. medical examiner said Wednesday afternoon.

Terrence Sterling, 31, died of the wounds in what the D.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined to be a homicide. That manner of death rules out that Sterling died because of suicide, an accident or natural causes.

Information was not available immediately on whether Sterling was shot more than once or if a single bullet caused his injuries.

Sterling, of Fort Washington, Maryland, died Sept. 11 after a Metropolitan Police Department officer shot him at 3rd and M streets NW. Police say the officer fired after Sterling intentionally rammed a police cruiser with his motorcycle.

Attorney: Man Who Died in Pasadena Police Custody Was Beaten, Not Given Proper Medical Attention
By Cindy Von Quednow, Chris Wolfe | KTLA | Updated: October 3, 2016

The attorney representing the family of a Pasadena man who died while in police custody last week said Monday that the man was repeatedly kicked and beaten by officers and was not given proper medical attention before he died.

Caree Harper, who represents Reginald Thomas's family, said during a news conference in front of the Pasadena Police Department that six officers were involved in the incident and could have handled the situation differently.

“Why couldn’t you give him time and deescalate?” Harper asked.
[...]
Thomas was the father of eight children and had one on the way.

His girlfriend, Shainie Lindsay, had previously told KTLA that Thomas was "dysfunctional" and bipolar, and had previous run-ins with police.

Pasadena police said officers were called to an apartment complex at 2:20 a.m. Friday for a "domestic disturbance with a suspect at the location armed with a knife."

Thomas, 36, did not comply with officers' orders and tried to "re-enter an occupied apartment," according to a Pasadena Police Department news release. After a Taser was used on Thomas, a fight ensued.

He was subdued and restrained, but the restraints were removed when he was in distress. He ultimately died at the scene.

L.A. County sheriff's sergeant gravely wounded in Lancaster shooting; suspected gunman in custody
By Veronica Rocha, Richard Winton, Joseph Serna | LA Times | October 5, 2016, 2:45PM PT

Los Angeles County sheriff’s sergeant was shot and critically injured Wednesday after responding to call of a residential burglary in Lancaster, authorities said.

Gunshots were reported about 12:30 p.m. in the 3200 block of West Avenue J-7, triggering a massive search for the shooter, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Shortly after 2 p.m., the suspected gunman was taken into custody, according to Nicole Nishida, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s department. Television news footage showed the man running through the backyard of a home and then putting his arms up.

The wounded sergeant was driven in a sheriff’s cruiser to Antelope Valley Hospital in grave condition. Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris, who was at the hospital, said the lawman was shot in the face. Parris said he knew the officer well, but did not name him.

Activists clash with Portland police as council OKs contract
By AP | Yahoo News | October 12, 2016

Image

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Police used pepper spray and arrested nine people as demonstrators stormed City Hall in Portland, Oregon, Wednesday trying to stop the City Council from voting on a new police contract that includes more pay for officers and raised questions about the future use of body cameras.

The demonstration forced Mayor Charlie Hales to stop the meeting, but city commissioners soon reconvened in a secure, third-floor room to vote while protesters from Black Lives Matter and Don't Shoot Portland were kept below.

Amid chants and shouts from below, the commissioners voted 3-1 in favor of the new contract, setting off another round of protests that briefly blocked public transit in the downtown core.

Protesters threw object at officers both inside and outside City Hall, the Portland Police Bureau said in a statement.

Protesters dispersed as darkness fell, but organizers said a demonstration was planned for Friday.

Boston police officers critically injured in 'ferocious firefight' identified
Man wearing body armor opens fire on officers in East Boston
By WCVB News | Updated October 13, 2016, 5:23PM ET

Image

BOSTON —Boston police have identified the two officers who were shot and critically wounded by a man with an assault rifle as they responded to a report of a domestic disturbance.

Kirk Figueroa, 33, of East Boston, fired at Officer Richard Cintolo, a 27-year veteran of the department, and Officer Matt Morris, a 12-year veteran, late Wednesday night shortly after they arrived at a home on Gladstone Street in the city's East Boston neighborhood.

“When the officers arrived, they were met by a victim at the door, who claimed his roommate had pulled a large knife on him,” Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said.

Evans said the suspect displayed what they believe to be a tactical shotgun and started firing at the officers. Several other officers who were stationed outside ran inside and exchanged gunfire with the suspect.

The two wounded officers were hospitalized in "extremely critical condition.". They underwent surgery overnight and are recovering, police said.

Figueroa was shot and killed by responding officers, who then began administering first aid to the wounded officers, one a 28-year veteran, the other a 12-year veteran of the force.

"Two of the officers dragged their fellow officers out of the line of fire so they were in a protected zone, and the officers continued to engage in a gun exchange," Evans said. "One officer had his hand in one of the wounds, and I think that was instrumental in getting the officer down to Mass General quickly."

Evans commended the officers who rushed in to help their fallen brothers "with no fear whatsoever," of harm to themselves.

Nine other officers were being treated at Tufts Medical Center for trauma, stress and minor injuries.

I like what the Chief said in a presser early this morning (only hours after the incident) when asked the idiotic question "why the officer fired a shot?". "If two officers in marked cars, wearing uniforms, asks you to step out of the car, it's a good idea not to have a gun in your hand while exiting the vehicle."

Officers are wising up that yelling "put down the gun" doesn't work. Shoot or be shot. ;)

Police-Involved Shooting In West Baltimore Leaves Man Injured
By | WBAL-TV11 | November 23, 2016

Baltimore police are investigating a police-involved shooting, city police spokesman Detective Jeremy Silbert confirmed.

The shooting happened 10:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of North Monroe Street in West Baltimore.

Police said an officer stopped a gold BMW station wagon and called for backup. One of the officers said he saw a gun in the driver's hand and opened fire, striking the driver in the shoulder.

The driver is current at a hospital in critical condition, police said. None of the officers reported injuries.

"The officer on the driver's side asked the driver to exit the vehicle," Baltimore police spokesman T.J. Smith said. "As the driver was exiting the vehicle, the officer on the passenger's side noticed a handgun in the possession of that driver. The officer on the driver's side fired one round, striking the suspect in the upper body."

A loaded revolver was found at the scene, according to police. A spokesperson for the department said he believed the officer made the traffic stop because the driver had two different tags on his vehicle.

The officer who opened fire is on administrative leave.

Pair charged in explosive device at elementary school; planned to shoot cops, start race war
By Carol Robinson | AL.com, Alabama | November 23, 2016, 2:14PM

Image
Zachary Edwards and Raphel Dilligard (Trussville Police)

A convicted felon who claims he wanted to shoot cops is behind bars in connection with the explosives device planted outside of a Trussville elementary school.

Authorities today announced state charges against 35-year-old Zachary Edwards and 34-year-old Raphel Dilligard, both of eastern Birmingham. They are charged with possession of a hoax destructive device, rendering false alarm and making terrorist threats, said Trussville police Capt. Jeff Bridges.

The warrants were issued this morning after the week-long probe by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Trussville police, the Alabama State Fire Marshal's Office, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

Edwards claimed to be a member of the Black Panthers and the Black Mafia, but authorities have not yet confirmed his reported associations with any organized group. "My guys believe this individual to be a very dangerous person,'' said Dave Hyche, ATF's assistant special agent in charge in Alabama.

Lawmen responded en masse to Magnolia Elementary School on Wednesday, Nov. 16, after they received a 911 from a woman who reported seeing a Hispanic male place the package on a pickup truck that belonged to a school cafeteria worker. The package was a box with wires and timer attached.

"When we first saw what we had, we knew this was something to take serious and we put on the full-court press. It disturbed us from the start,'' Hyche said. "I've never seen such a well-orchestrated and rapid response."

Hyche today said the children and staff weren't in any danger from the device, and even if it had been in working condition, it was on the far side of the school where there was no glass.

The first break in the case came when investigators were able to trace that 911 to a cell phone that had once been owned by Edwards, said Hyche and Bridges. The 911 call was actually placed by Edwards, who described his voice to try to sound like a woman.

Also, the timer – a stopwatch - used on the device was determined to have been sold at Walmart, and Hyche said investigators then analyzed all 18 recent buyers in the area. They quickly eliminated those that would have a legitimate reason for needing a timer – like a track coach - that ultimately led them to the store in Irondale where a woman - later determined to be Dilligard - was seen on video surveillance buying the timer.

Edwards and Dilligard were taken into custody Tuesday evening at their home in the 7700 block of Fifth Avenue South.

Once brought in for questioning, both gave confessions. Edwards admitted to planting the device, and said his plan was to get all police officers and first responders in one place so he could shoot them. "I guess he doesn't like cops,'' Bridges said.

Officer tries to save baby girl who stops breathing at restaurant
Infant's mother was among group of protesters outside
By WBAL-TV11 | Updated: 5:45 PM EST November 26, 2016

BALTIMORE — Despite life-saving efforts by a Baltimore police officer, an infant who had stopped breathing inside a restaurant died at a hospital Saturday, police said.

Witnesses said the infant's mother was one of around 30 people who had gathered outside the restaurant to protest a police-involved shooting that happened a day earlier.

The group had assembled near Greenmount Avenue to demonstrate against the shooting. The man police shot was armed with two knives at the time, police said.

An officer patrolling the area during Saturday's protest was approached by a group of people who informed him that a baby girl was not breathing inside the restaurant.

The officer rushed inside and began to perform CPR until paramedics arrived.

The 1-month-old infant was taken to a hospital where she later died.

It is unknown if any pre-existing medical conditions contributed to the infant's death.

Police said the officers who attempted to help the infant will be provided with counseling services.

Minguell Kennedy Lembrick, 32 / Albany Police Department

AMERICUS, Ga. (WGXA) -- Two officers were shot, one fatally, in an incident in Americus Wednesday morning.

In a press conference at about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, Americus Police Chief Mark Scott said that one Americus police officer was killed and a Georgia Southwestern State University campus officer was injured.

Scott said the Americus Police Department received the call of a domestic dispute at an apartment complex near Georgia Southwestern at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. He said the Americus officer responded and the Georgia Southwestern campus officer went to the scene as backup.

He said the two officers were shot by the suspect, later identified as Minguell Kennedy Lembrick, 32.

The Americus police officer died and the Georgia Southwestern officer was life-flighted to a Macon hospital.

At a press conference at about 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, Scott identified the Americus police officer who was killed as Nicholas Smarr. The Georgia Southwestern Officer was identified as Jody Smith. Scott said that Smith was still listed in critical condition.

About an hour after the shooting, a Facebook account with the name "Minguell Gstreet Lembrick" went live for four seconds. A man in the video was seen saying "I'm gonna miss y'all folks, man." The video was viewed about 20,000 times before it, along with the account, was removed. Scott would not comment on the video in his press conference.

Scott said Lembrick was still at large as of 4 p.m.

As a follow-up to the above story, the second wounded officer has died. The POS who shot them was cornered in a house yesterday by SWAT and killed himself.
These officers were childhood friends who grew up together and died together. Way too young. :(

The Americus community is gathering Friday night to honor two officers who were killed in the line of duty this week.

On Wednesday morning, 25-year-old Nick Smarr and 26-year-old Jody Smith were responding to a domestic dispute at an apartment complex near the Georgia Southwestern State campus when 32-year-old Minquell Kennedy Lembrick opened fire.

Bullets hit both officers, killing Smarr on scene. Smith was transported to a Macon hospital and underwent surgery, but also later died.

Both Smarr and Smith were long-time friends and had been in law enforcement for more than a decade. Smarr worked with the Americus Police Department while Smith was a public safety officer for GSW.

Driver suspected of deliberately running down officer in traffic stop
By Lyndsay Winkley | San Diego Union-Tribune | June 19, 2017

Officers are looking for one of the men suspected of intentionally running down an Oceanside motor officer as he made a traffic stop Monday morning, a police spokesman said.

The injured officer — a veteran with more than 25 years experience — was flown to a hospital with unspecified injuries. He was conscious and breathing when he was transported, and later underwent surgery, police spokesman Tom Bussey said.

The motor officer had stopped an Acura for a minor traffic violation when a driver in a Dodge Dart struck him on Oceanside Boulevard near Foussat Road about 10:40 a.m., police spokesman Tom Bussey said.

The driver of the Dodge sped off after the crash, headed south on Foussat. The car turned onto Industry Street where the driver and a passenger bailed, Bussey said.

One of the men was taken into custody soon after. Officers are still searching for the second man, who was described as black and was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, black shorts and flip flops.

Bussey described the crash as “very disturbing” and said both suspects face attempted murder charges.
