Sri Lanka blasts: 20 killed and hundreds injured in church and hotel explosions

Security officials report blasts at three churches and three hotels in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday

A string of blasts hit high-end hotels and churches in Sri Lanka on Sunday, killing at least 20 people and injuring hundreds as worshippers attended Easter services.

The first explosions were reported at St Anthony’s Church in Colombo and St Sebastian’s in the town of Negombo just outside the capital.

The Colombo National hospital director, Samindi Samrakoon, told Reuters she knew of at least 20 deaths and 280 people injured.

At least 160 people injured in the St Anthony’s blast had been admitted to the Colombo National hospital by mid-morning, an official told AFP.

“A bomb attack to our church, please come and help if your family members are there,” read a post in English on the Facebook page of the St Sebastian’s Church at Katuwapitiya in Negombo.

Shortly after those blasts were reported, police confirmed three hotels in the capital had also been hit, along with a church in the town of Batticaloa, in the east of the country.

At least 50 dead after Easter bombings in Sri Lanka
Stuff NZ, 18:05, Apr 21 2019

Sri Lankan Army soldiers secure the area around St. Anthony's Shrine after a blast in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Six bombs have detonated at three churches and three hotels frequented by tourists in Sri Lanka, authorities say.

At least 50 people have been killed and 280 more injured in the Easter Sunday bombings around 8.45am local time, according to Sri Lanka police.

One of the churches targeted was St Anthony's in Colombo. The other two were St Sebastian's in Negombo, a Catholic majority town 30 kilometres from the capital, and Zion Church in Batticaloa, 250 kilometres east of the capital.

Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera said that the injured were being evacuated while security forces have cordoned off the areas and search operations are underway.

The injured included foreigners staying at the three five-star hotels - the Cinnamon Grand, Kingsbury and the Shangri-La, located in the heart of Colombo.

A security official says they suspect the blasts at two churches were carried out by suicide bombers.

Easter Sunday explosions at multiple churches and hotels rock Sri Lanka, death tolls rises past 200
By Louis Casiano, Stephen Sorace, Lucia I. Suarez Sang | Fox News

A pair holding U.S. and British nationalities were among the 11 foreigners killed after a series of explosions struck three churches and three luxury hotels in and just outside of Sri Lanka’s capital Easter Sunday, leaving at least 207 people dead and 450 others injured, officials said.

Sri Lanka's foreign ministry said the other foreigners whose nationalities have been verified included three Indians, one Portuguese national, two Turkish nationals, and three British nationals.

The U.S. State Department confirmed in a statement that “several U.S. citizens were among those killed” in the explosions, though details were still emerging. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo went on to condemn the Easter morning "terror attacks."

"Attacks on innocent people gathering in a place of worship or enjoying a holiday meal are affronts to the universal values and freedoms that we hold dear, and demonstrate yet again the brutal nature of radical terrorists whose sole aim is to threaten peace and security," Pompeo said in the statement.

The six nearly simultaneous blasts—followed hours later by two more explosions—marked the bloodshed as among the worst since the South Asian country’s 26-year civil war ended a decade ago, a spokesperson for the Sri Lanka police said.

Taqiyya for Easter
by Mark Steyn
Steyn on the World
April 22, 2019

Let's say a fire breaks out at Notre Dame cathedral in Paris at the start of Holy Week, and just after two of the city's other most prominent houses of worship - St Sulpice and the Basilica of St Denis - have been attacked and vandalized.

Well, I think we can all confidently say as the first flames are beginning to lick the ceiling that it's undoubtedly an accident. Cigarette butt. Or maybe computer glitch. Probably just an overheated smart phone. We don't need to get in there and sift through the debris. We can just announce it.

On the other hand, when there are coordinated attacks on Easter services at several churches in Sri Lanka, it becomes a little more challenging to pass off multiple suicide-bombings killing nearly three hundred people as an electrical malfunction.

So, in contrast to the confident declarations of a week ago, on Sunday morning the media opted for a subtler narrative. Lead sentence from The Economist:

IT HAS BEEN nearly ten years since the guns fell silent in Sri Lanka's civil war. But bloodshed returned with a vengeance...

So it's something to do with the Tamil Tigers? Their guns fell silent, but now they've returned with a vengeance, eh?

Sri Lanka bombings: Isis claims responsibility for deadly church and hotel attacks on Easter Sunday

Isis publishes video of bombers pledging allegiance to its leader before attack

Lizzie Dearden

A photo released by Isis's Amaq propaganda agency claiming to show seven suicide bombers who carried out the Sri Lanka attacks

Isis has claimed responsibility for bombings that left more than 300 people dead in Sri Lanka, releasing a video of the alleged attackers pledging allegiance to its leader.

In a statement released by its Amaq propaganda agency, the group said it was targeting citizens of countries bombings its territories and Christians.

“A security source told Amaq agency the perpetrators of the attack targeting the citizens of [US-led] coalition countries and Christians in Sri Lanka were Islamic State fighters,” it said.

The wording of Isis's claim is similar to that for previous atrocities that were thought to be inspired by the group but not directly orchestrated by it.

It came after Isis supporters circulated unverified photographs claiming to show three of the suicide bombers who targeted churches and hotels on Easter Sunday.
