Two police officers and a passer-by have been shot dead by a gunman who witnesses claim shouted "Allahu Akbar" during a cafe attack in Belgium.

After killing the three victims the shooter fled and took a woman hostage at a high school before being shot by police.

The officers and the passer-by were gunned down at Cafe des Augustins in Liege city centre at about 10.30am on Tuesday.

Two other police officers were wounded.

Witnesses said the gunman was armed with two weapons and shouted "Allahu Akbar" as he carried out the attack, VTM reported.
The gunman fled and took a female cleaner hostage at the Athenee de Waha high school.

A drug dealer and robber who was radicalised behind bars carried out the terror attack in Belgium that left three people dead.

Benjamin Herman, 36, was out on day release in the city of Liege when he hunted down two female police officers, stole their guns and shot them dead, before killing a third person.

Liege’s police chief said Herman’s motive was to target the police, while witnesses said the prisoner shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ as he launched the attack.

All three victims of the brutal attack have now been named.

The police officers have been identified as Lucile Garcia and Soraya Belkacemi, while the civilian killed was 22-year-old Cyril Vangriecken.

Herman was on a 48-hour release from prison. The fourth person he killed was a former cellmate.

Herman was “already on the run” after committing another murder on Monday night in the town of On, in southern Belgium, the source said.

That link was this morning confirmed by the local prosecutor.

Belgian broadcaster RTBF reported he had been released from prison on Monday.
