ISIS claims responsibility for Egypt's Palm Sunday church bombings
Joe Sterling, Faith Karimi, Mohammed Tawfeeq, Hamdi Alkhshali | CNN | Updated April 9, 2017, 1:36PM ET

(CNN) - ISIS claimed responsibility for bombings that killed 43 at two Coptic churches in Egypt on Palm Sunday -- brazen strikes against a vulnerable minority on one of the most important days on the Christian calendar.

The terror group's Amaq media wing said "a security detachment" of the Islamic State carried out the attacks on churches in the cities of Tanta and Alexandria. The bombings also left scores wounded.

CNN could not independently confirm that ISIS was behind the attacks -- or had any involvement in planning them. ISIS often uses Amaq news agency to claim attacks after they have happened.

The first blast was in the northern city of Tanta, where a powerful explosion ripped through a Palm Sunday service at St. George's Church, killing 27 people and wounding 78 others, state TV reported. The explosive device was planted under a seat in the main prayer hall, it said.

Not long after that, at least 16 people were killed and 41 others wounded in a suicide bomb attack outside St. Mark's Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Alexandria, according to two state-news outlets. Egyptian state media also reported that the head of Egypt's Coptic Church, Pope Tawadros II, was inside the Church when the blast happened. He was not injured.

In a statement, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi condemned the attacks, saying the "outrageous" action "targets both the Copts and Muslims of the homeland." He ordered investigators to "hunt down the perpetrators" and "take all measures to offer the necessary care for the wounded."

ISIS publishes details on church bombings in #Egypt. Group says attackers are Abu al-Baraa al-Masri (Alexandria) &Abu Isaac al-Masri (Tanta).

This is of course worrying for #Egypt. Both suicide bombers who attacked the churches today are Egyptian nationals, not foreign fighters.

Palm Sunday attacks: 43 dead, more than 100 injured in church bombings carried out by ISIS in Egypt
By FOX NEWS, AP | April 9, 2017

At least 43 people were killed and more than 100 injured in two separate Palm Sunday attacks at Coptic Christian churches in Egypt, each carried out by the ISIS terror group.

The first blast happened at St. George Church in the Nile Delta town of Tanta, where at least 27 people were killed and 78 others wounded, officials said.

Television footage showed the inside of the church, where a large number of people gathered around what appeared to be lifeless, bloody bodies covered with papers.

A second explosion – which Egypt’s Interior Ministry says was caused by a suicide bomber who tried to storm St. Mark's Cathedral in the coastal city of Alexandria -- left at least 16 dead, and 41 injured. The attack came just after Pope Tawadros II -- leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria -- finished services, but aides told local media that he was unharmed.

At least three police officers were killed in the St. Mark’s attack, the ministry told The Associated Press.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the attacks via its Aamaq media agency, following the group's recent video vowing to step up attacks against Christians, who the group describes as "infidels" empowering the West against Muslims.

These attacks.. at the most holy sites of Coptic Christianity... targeting innocent civilians worshiping on a very holy occasion crosses SEVERAL RED LINES... so i guess a $100 million dollar air strike is called for?
The photos so far have not shown dead children, but they are shocking and upsetting and tragic.

It does not matter exactly WHO is responsible, so long as you send a message by bombing something.

President Trump said he believes Egyptian President el-Sisi will respond accordingly to these savage attacks.

Father Daniel Maher, still in his bloody tunic, lost his son Bishoy in the St George church bombing.
