At least 35 killed, 40 wounded in Istanbul nightclub terror attack
January 1, 2017 12:52pm

AT least one gunman, allegedly disguised as Santa, has killed 35 clubbers inside an Istanbul nightclub in a New Year’s Eve terror attack.

The gunman shot his way into the popular Reina nightclub packed with New Year’s revellers at around 1.30am local time (10.30am AEDT).

The attacker is believed to have opened fire at police outside the nightclub before entering and firing on people inside.

Media reports said more than one assailant may have been involved in the attack.

The current location of the gunman is unknown, and there are reports a gunman is still inside the nightclub.

Istanbul’s governor Vasip Sahin confirmed 35 revellers were murdered attack and around 40 others were wounded at the nightclub in Istanbul’s Ortakoy district.

The attack sparked mass panic, with some diving into the Bosphorus Strait between Europe and Asia to escape the bullets. Rescuers were battling to salvage them to safety.

Turkish television channel NTV said special force police officers were searching the nightclub.

Thanks for the updates. I've been trying to find an article and got distracted.
So sad, horrific. In a nightclub of all places. :(

NYC has brought in so many extra security from around the area. I will be surprised if anything happens.
At the same time, you couldn't pay me to be there in the crowd.

Going to go read what happened in Turkey. Chris has on a bowl (football) game so I haven't seen any news about it, IF any.

All kinds of different information is coming out. There is footage of a guy all in white from inside the club so that is at least 2 men. I'm thinking the Santa Suit is going to turn out to be premature speculation.

And... apparently it is a recommended tactic for rag-heads.

Maybe they are so fucking dumb they will try Santa suits at Easter? :roll

It says "We are Muslims" The rest is unclearly translated but I believe they compare Santa to a caveman.

I think someone dressed like Santa would have had the shit beat out of him before he could make it to the club.

Unless the savage in the video outside the club changed into a white suit once he got inside the club there were at least 2 shooters or maybe the lighting is so poor the clothing just looks very different? Preliminary reports were that at least one savage was still in the club.....but.......the police are trying to shut down a 2 mile radius and now Erdogan has stuffed a hijab in all their mouths so it will be personal eyewitnesses getting information out and sorting fact from fiction out from that is going to be rough.

Just read on Twitter that over 100 dead and shooter on the run. Obviously unconfirmed but even a single shooter with an automatic weapon could have easily killed 100 people in such closed and crowded quarters.

Thanks Carm. I think the pic looks like he is taking off a coat/jacket.

I wondered when the number of fatalities would increase. It stayed at 35 for too long. Yes, if they were caught by surprise, I can see where he could do that damage. At the link above (itv.com) a witness said there were three people on top of her, one was her husband who was shot. Picturing layers of injured people. :(

Twitter is full of foreign language tweets ... difficult to sift through.

I can't believe Istanbul is still not trending.

Agence France-Presse is reporting comments from the interior minister, saying that the death toll has risen to 39, including 16 foreigners.

Attacker still at large, says interior minister
The interior minister, Süleyman Soylu, has said the attacker is still on the loose. Earlier government reports stated there was a lone gunman who was killed by police.
