Lorry ploughs into German market - reports
6 minutes ago

Several people have been injured as a lorry ploughed into a Christmas market in central Berlin, according to media reports.

Video footage from the scene shows stalls knocked over and people lying injured on the ground.

It is unclear whether it was an accident or whether the vehicle was deliberately driven into the stalls.

The market is at Breitscheidplatz, close to the Kaiser Wilhelm memorial church on the Kurfuerstendamm.

Here’s a roundup of what we know:

  • German police believe those responsible for a deadly attack on a Berlin Christmas market could still be at large after admitting they could have arrested the wrong man. Holger Münch, the head of the federal criminal police, said: “We need to work on the assumption that an armed perpetrator is still on the loose. As a result of this we are on high alert.”
  • The German chancellor, Angela Merkel, has visited the scene of what she said was an assumed terrorist attack. “It would be particularly hard to bear for all of us if it was confirmed that a person committed this crime who asked for protection and asylum in Germany,” she said.
  • But Münch admitted there was still a “question mark” over whether the attacker was an Islamist. The chief prosecutor, Peter Frank, said that investigators were assuming that it could have been a terrorist because of the number of people killed and similarities with the attack in Nice in July. But he stressed that nothing was proven
  • Twelve people were killed in the incident on Monday, including six who have been identified as German. A further 48 people were wounded including 18 described as having very serious injuries.
  • Police said a man found dead inside the truck, identified as a Polish citizen, was not the person who drove it into the market. He was stabbed and shot but the weapons have not been found.
  • A Pakistani man arrested 2km from the scene has denied involvement. “At the moment it is unclear if he really was the driver,” said the chief of Berlin’s police, Klaus Kandt.
  • Early on Tuesday, police reportedly raided a hangar at the disused Tempelhof airport in Berlin, part of which is being used to house refugees.
  • Berlin police said they were investigating if the truck was stolen from a construction site in Poland. The Polish company that owns the truck said its 37-year-old driver, who was transporting steel beams, had been due to take a break in Berlin but had not been heard from since Monday afternoon.
  • The White House condemned what it said “appears to have been a terrorist attack”. The president-elect, Donald Trump, called it a “horrifying terror attack”, blaming “Isis and other Islamist terrorists [who] continually slaughter Christians in their communities and places of worship”.
  • Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, said the attack was “savage in its cynicism”.
  • The rightwing populist party Alternative for Germany claimed the country’s Christian tradition was under attack. Frauke Petry, its chair, said: “The Christmas market was not an accidental target. It is not only an attack on our freedom and our way of life, but on our Christian tradition. Germany is a country which is divided over the immigration question.”
  • Ukip’s former leader Nigel Farage said “events like these will be the Merkel legacy”.
  • The Metropolitan police service in London is reviewing security at Christmas events in light of the attack.

Wow! German Officials Tried to Send Berlin Market Killer Back to Tunisia But ‘Couldn’t’ (VIDEO)
Jim Hoft Dec 21st, 2016 9:15 am 87 Comments

German police are searching for 23 year-old Tunisian Anis Amri in connection to the terror attack in Berlin.
The suspect is armed and dangerous.

Now this…
German officials reportedly tried to deport Anis Amri for his links to radical Islam but Tunisia wouldn’t take him.
So Amri stayed in Germany.

Earlier this week Amri killed 12 people at a Berlin Christmas Market.

This article has a lot of new info and updates on Anis Amri.

Germany arrests two on terror charges
By BBC News | January 23, 2016

Two men have been arrested in Germany on suspicion of planning an attack on a shopping centre in Oberhausen near the Dutch border, police say.

The brothers, aged 31 and 28 and born in Kosovo, were detained early on Friday in Duisburg.

Germany is on high alert after Monday's attack in Berlin, which left 12 dead.

A Europe-wide manhunt continues for Anis Amri, the Tunisian man suspected of driving a lorry into the Breitscheidplatz Christmas market.

Police said the Oberhausen attack had been intended to target the CentrO shopping centre.

Officers dressed in civilian clothing had been sent to patrol the centre and a nearby Christmas market after a tip from intelligence services, police said in a statement.

It is not yet known how advanced the preparations for the attack were, or if others were involved, the statement said.

There is no indication so far that Friday's arrests are linked to the Berlin attack.

Berlin truck attack suspect killed in Milan police shootout
By COLLEEN BARRY and NICOLE WINFIELD

MILAN (AP) — The Tunisian man suspected in a deadly attack on a Christmas market in Berlin was killed early Friday in a shootout with police in Milan during a routine patrol outside a train station, ending a Europe-wide manhunt.

Italian police said Anis Amri traveled from Germany through France and into Italy after Monday night's truck attack in Berlin, at least some of it by train. French officials refused to comment on his passage through France, which has increased surveillance on trains after both recent French attacks and the one in Germany.

Italian Premier Paolo Gentiloni praised the two young police officers for their courage in taking down Amri during a routine check of ID papers while he was alone outside the deserted station. But he also called for greater cross-border police cooperation, suggesting some dismay that Europe's open border policy had enabled Amri to move around easily despite being its No. 1 fugitive.

Amri, who shot one of the police officers in the shoulder, was identified with the help of fingerprints supplied by Germany.

"The person killed, without a shadow of a doubt, is Anis Amri, the suspect of the Berlin terrorist attack," said Italian Interior Minister Marco Minniti.

When I read the heading, I thought "Oh crap" I was hoping he would be arrested so they could get intel out of him. Well, Germany certainly didn't help, with him getting out so quickly. Probably while they were still interrogating the wrong guy. :roll

So much of this kinda thing in the article:

"It is now of great significance for us to establish whether the suspect had a network of supporters or helpers in preparing and carrying out the crime, and in fleeing, whether there were accessories or helpers," Frank said.

Great! They should get some good intel. Sounds like nephew is singing like a canary.

Police: Berlin market attacker recruited nephew
By AP Top News | December 25, 2016, 4:15PM CET

Tunisia's Interior Ministry says police have arrested the nephew of Berlin Christmas market attacker Anis Amri and two others — and says all three men are suspected of belonging to a terrorist cell and had contacts with Amri.

The ministry says the nephew, 18-year-old Fedi, told police he was in contact with Amri via Telegram's encrypted communications to avoid detection. He told police that Amri had recruited him to jihad and asked him to pledge allegiance to IS. The nephew recorded such a pledge and sent it to Amri via Telegram.

He told police that Amri, using an alias, had sent his nephew money through the post office to join Amri in Germany to help him and join the Abou Walaa network. Amri told his nephew that he was the "emir" of the network.

The Tunisian prosecutor's office has ordered all three men held in pre-trial detention pending further investigation.

Truckers Pay Tribute To Driver Killed By Berlin Terrorist By Forming Motorway Convoy
By Breaking911 | December 31, 2016

Image

Truckers have paid tribute to their colleague who was murdered in the Berlin Christmas market terror attack.

Lukasz Urban, aged 37, was the first victim of the terror attack which killed 12 on December 19.

Urban was waiting to deliver a shipment of steel in Berlin, when his truck was hijacked by the terrorist who shot him dead hours before crashing into a crowd.

Urban’s funeral on Thursday was attended by the country’s President and Polish special forces.

A letter from prime minister Beata Szydlo was also read out in which she described her ‘great pain and sadness’ and expressed her sympathy to Mr Urban’s family.

‘Poles have fallen victim to terrorist attacks carried out by Islamic fundamentalists but the tragedy that happened in Berlin is unique when it comes to the ruthlessness and cruelty of the perpetrator,’ Ms Szydlo said.

Berlin Christmas market attacker got order directly from IS: report
By Michelle Martin | Reuters | April 15, 2017

The Tunisian who killed 12 people by driving a truck into a Christmas market in Berlin received his orders directly from Islamic State, a German magazine reported on Saturday.

The militant group claimed responsibility for the attack on Dec. 19, but it was unclear whether it had planned and executed it, or just inspired the attacker with its calls on supporters to hit targets in enemy countries.

Der Spiegel cited information provided to German security authorities from the United Arab Emirates on Jan. 8 that said Anis Amri, the failed asylum seeker who drove the truck into the crowd, had received an order from a squad within IS.

The squad is known to German authorities from other proceedings against suspected IS militants disguised as refugees, the magazine said.

Amri, who had pledged allegiance to Islamic State, was shot dead by Italian police in Milan four days after the Berlin attack. Islamic State said the attack had been perpetrated by an IS "soldier ... in response to calls to target nationals of the coalition countries".
