A suspect is dead and at least nine injured after a rampage at Ohio State University.

A federal law enforcement official told CNN that there was one attacker, who mainly used a knife and a car in the attack - countering earlier reports that there was an active shooter.

But exactly what happened at the campus remains unclear since the Columbus Post-Dispatch is reporting that there were two attackers - one armed with a gun, and the other with a knife.

The chaos started around 10am, when a fire alarm was pulled at Watts Hall, home to the Materials Science and Engineering program.

Witnesses say that as they were evacuating the building when a man driving a car mowed down the crowds of innocent bystanders.

The attacker then reportedly got out of the car and started stabbing and slashing victims. The witness said that the knifeman didn't say anything throughout the attack but had a 'crazed' look on his face. A responding officer shot the suspect dead.

After the incident at Watts Hall, the law enforcement focus shifted to a nearby parking garage.

SWAT teams stormed the building just before 11am and minutes later two men, one black and one white, were led out in handcuffs.

1 Suspect Dead, 10 in Hospital After Ohio State Car-and-Knife Attack

An Ohio State University student plowed into a campus crowd with a car, then jumped out and started stabbing people with a butcher knife before being shot dead by police Monday morning, officials said.

Ten people were taken to hospitals after the ambush, and one was in critical condition. The incident was initially reported as an "active shooter" situation, but the suspect did not shoot anyone.

A police officer was on the scene within a minute and killed the assailant. "He engaged the suspect and eliminated the threat," OSU Police Chief Craig Stone said.

The suspect's name was not released, but law enforcement officials told NBC News he was an 18-year-old Ohio State student, a Somali refugee who was a legal permanent resident of the United States.

The motive was unknown, but officials said the attack was clearly deliberate and may have been planned in advance.

"This was done on purpose," Stone said.

"This car just swerved and ran into a whole group of people," said Nicole Kreinbrink, who was walking down the street when she saw the car hit people who had evacuated an academic building during a fire alarm.

"All these people were running and screaming and yelling," she added.

Jacob Bowers, an OSU sophomore, was sitting on a bench about 100 feet away when he noticed people running.

"Then I heard someone yell, 'He's got a knife.' And I saw a guy with a big-ass knife just chasing people around. When I saw that, I grabbed all my stuff and started running," Bowers said.

Bowers said he looked back to see a police officer on the scene. The officer yelled to the suspect, "Drop it a and get down or I'll shoot," and then fired on the suspect, Bowers said.

"The man was going insane," he said.

I see Jared Wyand tweeted the wrong name (that started out as a joke) and was retweeted over and over.

I hate it when that happens. :(

Those few VIP accounts always want to be the first to get the news out and are so often wrong. This is why I don't follow them on Gab. :roll

I quit looking on twitter. Too many "if it had been a Caucasian, he'd still be alive eating a hamburger", referring to Dylann Roof.
