A woman has died and up to five people have been injured in a possible terrorist knife attack in central London.

Police confirmed a man was arrested after being seen 'brandishing a knife' and 'injuring people' in front of horrified onlookers in Russell Square last night.

Officers arrived at the scene to find six people injured including one woman who died from her injuries a short time later. The condition of the other five is not yet known and police have not yet named or revealed the ages of the victims.

The woman's body is still believed to be at the scene with a forensics tent covering it on the pavement. Suited forensic officers also remain at the scene collecting evidence.

One source said the suspect was seen to go 'on the rampage' with the weapon.

The Met said the suspect was detained after being Tasered at the scene of the incident - opposite the three-star Imperial Hotel - at around 10.40pm last night.

It is understood police have cordoned off the area and there is a heavy presence of officers and paramedics at the scene. The Met said 'additional units' had been deployed.

We are expecting a statement from police shortly.

Vikram Dodd, the Guardian’s police and crime correspondent, reports that counter-terrorism officers are now involved in the investigation:

Scotland Yard’s counter terrorism command, known as SO15, are involved in the investigation.

At first officers from the local borough responded and made the arrest following the detention of the suspect.

But as detail emerged, the decision was made to have the counter-terrorism command involved in the investigation.

In a sign of the seriousness with which the incident was being treated by the Met, senior officers had been called into work, including chiefs in the Met’s counter terrorism command.

A new statement is expected from police, after a first giving only sparse details.

Looking for updates, meanwhile, this is so ironic. I was reading earlier today about the increase of armed police in the UK, but was baffled at the expectation of it taking up to 24 months to train and implement the 1,500 force in England and Wales -- 600 Met police were added as of today in London.

In the photos I have looked at, I didn't see any motorbikes.

Here we go...... excuses....

Police: 'mental health a significant factor'
We have just had an update from the police.
A 19-year-old man was Tasered by officers and is in custody in hospital.
Police say:
Mental health is a significant factor in this case.

But they are keeping an open mind regarding motive:
Terrorism remains one line of inquiry for us to explore.

Mental health issue is hardly an explanation.. ALL Islamic Terrorists are nuts... the whole Radical Islam thing is a certifiable mental condition as opposed to a "religion"

I await details of the guys name and origins.... and maybe what he shouted as he stabbed 6 people?

They need to clarify if this guy WAS an Islamic Terrorist... then they can get on with shining colored lights on iconic buildings... that always fixes things.

Two women, three men injured
A new statement from the Metropolitan police now says that two women and three men (and not one woman and four men, as earlier reported) were the five people injured in the attack.
This is in addition to the woman who died at the scene.
The statement gives no further information on their injuries.

I don't think they are going to give his name or information anytime soon.
I've got a dozen tabs open and not one piece of updated news except for that recent police report.

Russell Square attack suspect Zakaria Bulhan appears in court
Bulhan, 19, is charged with murdering 64-year-old US citizen Darlene Horton and attempting to murder five other people

By Chris Johnston | The Guardian | August 6, 2016

The teenager who allegedly killed a US tourist and injured five others in a random knife attack in Russell Square will appear at the Old Bailey on Tuesday after being remanded in custody following a brief appearance at Westminster magistrates court.

Zakaria Bulhan, 19, has been charged with murdering the 64-year-old woman and attempting to murder five other people in the central London assault on Wednesday night.

Bulhan, who wore a plain grey tracksuit, was asked to confirm his name, address and date of birth but kept one hand over his mouth, making his responses almost inaudible to the court.

The court heard that he declined representation at the hearing, shaking his head when asked if he wanted to see the duty solicitor.

The suspect held his head in his hands as the six charges were confirmed. He is accused of murdering US citizen Darlene Horton, who was due to fly back to America a day later, and the attempted murder of two other women and three men.

After seeing the artist's sketch in other article, I started looking for photos. This is a LONG article but has all the pics I can find. Looks like he is 10 y/o. One is from 2011, so he would have been 14. :roll

Was 'devout Muslim' Russell Square knifeman radicalised? Police to trawl 'impressionable' attacker's PC for links to ISIS as neighbour claims mental illness is a 'scapegoat'

• Anti-terror police are studying computers belonging to London murder suspect Zakaria Bulhan, 19
• Neighbour Parmjit Singh said: 'His mental health problems are a scapegoat. Why would he attack an American woman tourist in a random attack?'
• Mother-of-two Darlene Horton, 64, was stabbed to death in front of academic husband Dr Rick Wagner
• Couple had chosen to stay in London for an extra day and were due to fly back to Florida yesterday
• Bulhan said to have tried to kill himself on three occasions this year as mental health team helps police
• Police called to Russell Square after the crazed man 'went on the rampage' with kitchen knife
• Israeli Yovel Lewkowki, 18, also stabbed when she tried to help him believing he had been attacked

By Martin Robinson, Uk Chief Reporter | Mailonline | August 6, 2016

Counter-terror police will today forensically study computers belonging to the Russell Square knifeman as a neighbour claimed the 'impressionable' teenager could have been inspired by ISIS.

Scotland Yard believe Zakaria Bulhan, 19, a Norwegian national of Somali origin who moved to the UK in 2002, was not 'motivated by terrorism' but its officers are trawling his possessions for extremist material.

But neighbour Parmjit Singh, a BBC radio DJ known as 'DJ Precious' on the Asian network, said he had known 'impressionable' Bulhan for seven years, adding: 'His mental health problems are a scapegoat.'
