Gunmen attack Dhaka restaurant and take at least one hostage
Authorities say two police officers badly injured at Holey Artisan Bakery cafe in diplomatic quarter of Bangladeshi capital

Gunmen have attacked a restaurant popular with foreigners in the diplomatic quarter of the Bangladeshi capital, and reportedly taken at least one hostage.

Local media reported that a group of up to nine gunmen had entered the Holey Artisan Bakery cafe and opened fire on at around 9.20pm on Friday evening.

Jamuna Television quote a kitchen staff worker at the restaurant who escaped the attack and said that the gunmen chanted “Allahu Akbar” (“God is greatest”) as they launched the attack.

A large contingency of police and security guards cordoned off the area, trading gunfire with the attackers.

Benazir Ahmed, chief of the Rapid Action Battalion, said customers were still inside a restaurant and bakery targeted in the attack. “We believe we can resolve this peacefully,” he told reporters.

“Some derailed youths have entered the restaurant and launched the attack. We have talked to some of the people who fled the restaurant after the attack,” Ahmed said. “We are trying to talk to the attackers, we want to listen to them about what they want.”

Assistant police commissioner Mohammed Ashraful Karim told the Guardian that two policemen had been badly injured and that at least one hostage had been taken.

There were restrictions on "media". They stopped showing live clips and replayed old ones.. and even cut reports from the Internet.

The "siege" is over.. and reports of dead, but some hostages at least rescued and/or escaped. I am looking for clearer details.

Dhaka cafe attack ends with 20 foreign hostages among dead
Two police officers and six militants also killed in 11-hour siege which ended as 100 commandos stormed bakery

An attack on a cafe in Dhaka has left 28 people dead, including 20 foreign hostages, most of whom were killed with sharp weapons, the Bangladesh army said.

Brig Gen Naim Asraf Chowdhury told a news conference on Saturday that six militants and two police officers were killed, and 13 people were rescued.

The prime minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, said one of the gunmen had been captured alive in the dawn raid.

More than 100 Bangladeshi commandos stormed the Holey Artisan Bakery in the diplomatic quarter of the capital early on Saturday after the 12-hour siege began on Friday night.

“The terrorists killed the civilians last night. We have recovered huge cache of IED explosives and AK-22 assault rifles,” Chowdhury said.

The deceased had been moved to the Combined military hospital in Dhaka for postmortem examinations.

Lt Col Tuhin Mohammad Masud, the officer in charge of Bangladeshi commandos, said the rescued hostages included a Japanese citizen, who was injured, and two Sri Lankans. He said there were casualties among other hostages but did not provide details. Earlier reports had said seven Italians were among those taken hostage at the cafe, which is popular with foreigners.

A police officer at the scene said that when security forces tried to enter the premises at the beginning of the siege they were met with a hail of bullets and grenades.
