An Arizona man with links to Islamic jihad and his Phoenix roommate were identified Monday as the attackers killed outside a Texas art show featuring cartoon depictions of the Prophet Mohammed.

"The two gunmen who were involved in the shooting in Dallas... were determined to be from Phoenix," Assistant Special Agent in Charge John Lannarelli said Monday as federal investigators searched the pair's north Phoenix apartment.

Federal authorities who declined to be identified because they were not authorized to discuss the case identified the suspects as Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi.

Jury finds Abdul Malik Abdul Kareem guilty of helping plan terror attack in Garland, Texas
By The Associated Press | ABC15.com | March 17, 2017

PHOENIX - A jury on Thursday convicted an Arizona man of conspiring to support Islamic State in one of the first trials in the U.S. involving charges related to the terrorist group.

Abdul Malik Abdul Kareem also was found guilty on other counts stemming from an attack last spring at a Prophet Muhammad cartoon contest in Texas. Kareem was stoic when the verdict was read.

Authorities said Kareem bankrolled and motivated two Islamic State followers who were killed in a shootout with police while trying to carry out a rampage at the anti-Islam event in suburban Dallas.

Kareem also was convicted of providing guns used in the May 3 attack. Authorities say he and the two gunmen, Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi, had researched travel to the Middle East to join Islamic State fighters.

It was one of the first times a person was tried in the U.S. on charges related to the group. A trial in New York recently ended with a guilty verdict against a U.S. military veteran charged with attempting to join Islamic State.

Sentencing was set for June 27.

FBI: North Carolina man had contact with Garland attackers
By Mark Gillispie, AP | Fox4News.com | August 4, 2016

A North Carolina man arrested Thursday on accusations that he tried to recruit people to join the Islamic State group had communicated with one of two men shot dead by a police officer in Garland during an attack at an event where the Muslim prophet Mohammed was being depicted in cartoons, the FBI said.

Erick Jamal Hendricks, 35, was arrested Thursday morning in Charlotte, North Carolina, on a charge filed in Cleveland of providing material support to a terrorist group. A federal magistrate in Charlotte ordered that Hendricks be detained and assigned a federal public defender, who did not return telephone messages.

An FBI affidavit details online communications between Hendricks and an undercover FBI agent posing as an Islamic State recruit who witnessed the attack at the suburban Dallas civic center in May 2015.

It appears that charges were filed in Cleveland because of Hendricks' communication with Amir Said Abdul Rahman Al-Ghazi, who was arrested in June 2015 in suburban Cleveland trying to buy an AK-47 rifle from an undercover FBI agent. Authorities said Al-Ghazi had pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State and expressed an interest in conducting attacks in the U.S.

Earlier this year, Al-Ghazi pleaded guilty to providing material support to a terrorist organization and, according to the affidavit, has been cooperating with authorities.

Defense seeks new trial for AZ man convicted of terror charge
By Phil Benson | AZFamily.com | October 25, 2016

PHOENIX (KPHO/KTVK) - Sentencing for an Arizona man convicted of a terror charge has been moved to January.

The defense said Tuesday it wants a new trial for Abdul Malik Abdul Kareem, of Phoenix, in connection with an attack last spring on a Prophet Muhammad cartoon contest in Texas.

Abdul Kareem was expected to be sentenced in federal court Tuesday morning.

Abdul Kareem was convicted of a conspiracy charge related to plotting the attack as well as conspiring to provide support to the Islamic State group. Authorities say Kareem and the two gunmen, Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi, had researched travel to the Middle East to join Islamic State fighters.

Sentencing Delayed for Man Convicted of Garland Attack Plot
By AP | NBCDFW.com | January 24, 2017

Sentencing was postponed Tuesday for an American-born Muslim convert convicted of supporting the Islamic State group and helping to plot a 2015 attack on a Prophet Muhammad cartoon contest in Texas.

Abdul Malik Abdul Kareem appeared for an hour-long sentencing hearing in a federal court in Phoenix, but U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton delayed imposing his punishment and instead ordered attorneys to hand in legal briefs in preparation for a new sentencing hearing on Feb. 8.

Bolton asked prosecutors and Kareem's lawyer to provide opinions on whether a sentencing calculation used by federal judges to punish criminals should be increased in Kareem's case because the offenses were considered acts of terrorism.

Kareem said nothing during the hearing except "No" when asked by the judge whether he wanted a new lawyer.

Prosecutors are seeking a life sentence, while Kareem's lawyer has asked for less than six years of prison time.

Kareem provided the guns that two friends used to open fire outside the anti-Islam event in suburban Dallas and hosted the two Islamic State followers at his home to discuss the upcoming attack, authorities have said.

Abdul Malik Abdul Kareem sentenced to 30 years
By Melissa Blasius | ABC15 Arizona | February 8, 2017

PHOENIX - After the first trial of an ISIS conspirator in the United States, Abdul Malik Abdul Kareem was sentenced to 30 years in prison during a court hearing in Phoenix Wednesday.

Kareem helped two other men plot an attack on a Mohammed cartoon drawing contest in Garland, TX, in 2015.

Kareem was convicted last year on five counts including conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, lying to the FBI, and firearms charges.

“What they intended to do, and what he [Kareem] knew what they wanted to do was not only to try to kill some number of people… but to do it in the name of a foreign terrorist organization, ISIS,” Judge Susan Bolton said.

“He certainly associated with people who are radicalized,” Kareem’s attorney, Daniel Maynard said, “but I think it is clear he is different from Simpson and Soofi.”

Kareem maintains his innocence. He told the judge at sentencing, “I had nothing to do with this crime”
