Jamie Satterfield:

Why are there 9 separate rape charges? That's the ? Judge explains each refers to different methods of penetration

If they are at the rape counts that could mean they've reached decision on facilitation of murder counts

There's oral, vaginal and anal penetration charged 3 ways: with weapon, coercion and causing serious bodily injury

Learned who foreperson is - it's an older black woman who was nodding in agreement during Lavit's closing argument

Jury convicts Vanessa Coleman in kidnapping, murder of Channon Christian

KNOXVILLE — A Jackson, Tenn., jury reached a compromise verdict today in the re-trial of torture-slaying suspect Vanessa Coleman.

The jury convicted the Kentucky woman on charges of facilitation of the felony murder of Channon Christian, 21. They found her guilty, however, of lesser facilitation charges related to the kidnapping and rape of Christian.

For instance, Coleman was charged in Knox County Criminal Court with facilitation of especially aggravated kidnapping. The jury, however, found her guilty of the lesser charge of aggravated kidnapping.

The jury also declined to convict her of facilitation of aggravated rape and instead found her guilty of the lesser charge of facilitation of rape.

In all, the panel, which deliberated over two days, convicted her of 13 of the 17 facilitation counts she faced, and some of those guilty verdicts were for lesser-included offenses.

The panel was brought in from Madison County, Tenn., because of heavy local publicity.

The jury acquitted her outright of facilitation of felony murder in the kidnapping of Christian’s boyfriend, Christopher Newsom.

After the first trial in May 2010, Coleman received a 53-year sentence.

Prosecutors estimate the most she could face at sentencing would be 40 years.

Vanessa Coleman found guilty of facilitating murder of Channon Christian

Jurors have found Vanessa Coleman guilty on several counts of the facilitation to commit the first degree murder of Channon Christian. She was also found guilty of facilitation to commit second degree murder.

Coleman was charged with facilitating the kidnapping, rape, and murder of Channon Christian. Christian and her boyfriend, Chris Newsom, were killed in 2007. Coleman was previously found not guilty for crimes connected to Newsom, so she cannot be retried on those counts.

  • Count 12. Guilty of facilitation to commit first degree murder of Channon Christian in the Perpetration of Rape of Channon Christian

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Jurors delivered a guilty verdict on 13 of 17 counts Tuesday in the retrial against defendant Vanessa Coleman.

Jurors were tasked with deciding her guilt on 17 charges that she facilitated and participated in the torture, rape and murder of 21-year-old Channon Christian.

They found Coleman guilty on 13 charges and not guilty on 4 charges.

She was found guilty on charges of facilitating first-degree murder, second-degree murder, theft, rape, kidnapping, and theft.

Coleman was not found guilty on Count 7, a charge of facilitating first-degree murder, and Counts 42, 43, and 44, three charges of facilitating aggravated rape.

Christian's parents, Gary and Deena, said after the rulings that they were satisfied with the results.

Guilty again: New trial, similar outcome for Coleman in slaying
By Jamie Satterfield
Posted November 21, 2012 at 4 a.m.

A Jackson, Tenn., jury on Tuesday reached what most observers believe was a compromise verdict in the retrial of torture-slaying suspect Vanessa Coleman.

The jury convicted Coleman of facilitation of the felony murder of Channon Christian, 21, in a January 2007 torture-slaying but found her guilty of lesser charges in connection with the kidnapping and repeated rapes of Christian prior to her suffocation inside a trash can inside a Chipman Street house.

That means Coleman will face far less time than the 53 years in prison to which she was sentenced after her May 2010 trial.

The jury, made up of five black women, one black man, two white women and four white men, spent roughly nine hours deliberating over two days before reaching a verdict. The only question they posed during that time was about the various rape counts.

By Jamie Satterfield

A judge has set a proposed sentencing date of Feb. 1 in the retrial of torture-slaying suspect Vanessa Coleman.

In a letter filed this week in Knox County Criminal Court, Senior Judge Jon Kerry Blackwood is asking prosecutors Leland Price and TaKisha Fitzgerald and defense attorney Ted Lavit to check their respective calendars for availability to argue Coleman's fate on that date.
