Jessica Ridgeway case: Teen suspect Austin Sigg granted delay before entering a plea
Sigg faces 18 counts

Posted: 03/12/2013

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. - The teen accused of kidnapping and killing 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway did not enter a plea as expected Tuesday. The hearing was continued until Friday, April 12.

7NEWS reporter Amanda Kost tweeted that Sigg's attorneys requested a delay of two months, but the judge granted them only one month.

The lawyers also mentioned Sigg's mental health, indicating a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity is still on the table.

Sigg was quiet during the hearing. The only sign of emotion was a smile at his family while he was escorted into the courtroom and a deputy removed his handcuffs.

Jessica Ridgeway Update: Austin Sigg, Colo. teen charged in slaying of 10-year-old, pleads not guilty
April 12, 2013 4:37 PM

(CBS/AP) GOLDEN, Colo. - Austin Sigg, a Colorado teen, pleaded not guilty Friday to murder and kidnapping in the slaying and dismemberment of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway, in a crime that panicked Denver-area residents last fall - despite police testimony that the suspect confessed to the crime.

The 18-year-old Sigg stunned a courtroom by entering the not guilty pleas in the girl's death in the Denver suburb of Westminster. Sigg also pleaded not guilty to a May attack on a 22-year-old jogger at a lake in Jessica's neighborhood.

Sigg's not guilty pleas came despite his alleged confession and the discovery of some of the girl's remains at his home.

GOLDEN — The teenager accused of kidnapping, killing and dismembering 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway has a scheduled appearance in a Jefferson County courtroom on Friday.

Austin Sigg, who turned 18 in jail, is charged with 18 counts related to Jessica's death, as well as an attack on a jogger at Ketner Lake last Memorial Day weekend.

Four of the counts carry mandatory life sentences.

He pleaded not guilty last month, over objections of his attorneys, who said they needed more time to consider a plea. At that same hearing last month, Judge Stephen Munsinger set a Sept. 20 start date for Sigg's trial, which is expected to last three weeks.

Austin Sigg attorneys question DNA evidence in Jessica Ridgeway case

GOLDEN — Lawyers for the teenager accused of kidnapping, killing and dismembering 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway raised questions Friday about possible DNA contamination in the case.

Austin Sigg, who turned 18 in jail, is charged with 18 counts related to Jessica's death, as well as an attack on a jogger at Ketner Lake last Memorial Day weekend.

Four of the counts carry mandatory life sentences.

He and his attorneys appeared in a Jefferson County courtroom Friday for a hearing on motions.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation issued three "contamination memos" regarding DNA testing in the Ridgeway and jogger cases. A CBI analyst explained the process of DNA testing and analysis.

He pleaded not guilty last month, over objections of his attorneys, who said they needed more time to consider a plea. At that same hearing last month, Judge Stephen Munsinger set a Sept. 20 start date for Sigg's trial, which is expected to last three weeks.

It was a shock but then during a trial evidence could show enough to affect the outcome as far as sentencing.

One article a neighbor reported he had a fascination with death. I wonder if there's anything more about that out there. Or was it because he took a mortuary science class I wonder.

Suspect in Ridgeway murder wants trial moved
11:21 PM, Jun 19, 2013

GOLDEN - Lawyers for a teen accused of killing Jessica Ridgeway, as well as attacking a jogger months earlier, want his trial moved out of Jefferson County.

Lawyers for Austin Sigg say in court documents that "massive" news coverage of the case has jeopardized his right to a fair trial.

They are seeking separate trials on charges stemming from the death of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway last year, the attack on the jogger, and charges alleging there was sexually exploitative material in Sigg's home.

Sigg's lawyers also want the judge to suppress numerous statements, suggesting in some cases that Sigg spoke without being told he could have an attorney.

Sigg’s lawyers arguing for venue change, building mental trauma defense
Posted on: 11:59 am, August 29, 2013, by Will C. Holden, updated on: 07:09pm, August 29, 2013

GOLDEN, Colo. —
Defense attorneys for the 18-year-old accused of kidnapping and murdering Westminster 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway asked a judge Thursday to grant a change of venue for their client Austin Sigg’s upcoming murder trial.

Citing reports from a researcher who did a statewide marketing survey for the defense, Sigg’s lawyers insisted an unprecedented percentage of the Jefferson County population have knowledge about the case.

In fact, the defense said the research showed that a substantial portion of the surveyed population were able to identify Sigg more easily than their two U.S. Senators, and an exponential portion of those survey were able to identify Sigg and not their district attorney.

The judge did not rule on the defense request Thursday. Instead, he wants to bring potential jurors into the courtroom and interview them to see if Sigg can get a fair trial in Jefferson County. The judge denied a defense motion for a continuance in the case.

During an earlier recess in Thursday’s motions hearing, prosecutors asserted that Austin Sigg’s lawyers are attempting to build a mental trauma-related defense.

Austin Sigg pleads guilty in kidnapping, murder of Jessica Ridgeway

GOLDEN — Nearly one year ago, with a community in anguish over the disappearance and death of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway, Austin Sigg told detectives what he had told his horrified mother hours earlier: He did it.

On Tuesday, Sigg confessed again in Jefferson County District Court and, against the advice of his attorneys, changed his plea to guilty in the kidnapping, death and dismemberment of Jessica. In changing his plea, Sigg, 18, also admitted for the first time to sexually abusing Jessica and attacking a female jogger at Ketner Lake on Memorial Day weekend last year.

Also from Homeschool Dad

The sentencing of Austin Sigg in the Jessica Ridgeway trial starts tomorrow (apparently they're expecting a two-day hearing)

WESTMINSTER, Colo. -
Austin Sigg is not a psychopath, but has psychopathic characteristics, according to a psychologist who testified at Sigg's sentencing hearing on Monday.

Austin Sigg is facing more than 40 years in prison for the murder of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway and the attack on a female jogger at Ketner Lake.

"I don't believe he is a psychopath," Dr. Anna Salter testified Monday.

Teen who murdered, raped and dismembered Jessica Ridgeway, 10, appears in court to be sentenced

  • The sentencing hearing for Austin Sigg, now 18, started today after he plead guilty to killing and dismembering Jessica Ridgeway
  • In May 2012, he also attacked a 22-year-old jogger in Ketner Lake and tried to put her to sleep with a rag soaked in homemade chloroform
  • Prosecutors are pressing for consecutive sentences on the 15 charges which would have Sigg behind bars for the rest of his life

By Associated Press Reporter and Daily Mail Reporter
PUBLISHED: 17:38 GMT, 18 November 2013 | UPDATED: 20:47 GMT, 18 November 2013

Jessica Ridgeway's family today heard horrifying details of how their 10-year-old daughter was strangled and dismembered by a teenager.

Austin Sigg, 18, was emotionless as prosecutors pushed for consecutive sentences on all 15 convictions of Jessica's murder, in an attempt to keep the teen behind bars for the rest of his life.

Since he was 17 when he committed the crime, Sigg is exempt from the death penalty and eligible for parole after 40 years, but the other charges could add up to a life sentence.

A psychologist told the court how Sigg was sexually aroused by dismembering the girl and lied to her about how she would see her mother again.

Expert witness Anna Salter said: 'There’s no logical motive for dismemberment other than sexual thrill.'

Sigg acted against the advice of his defense team, and plead guilty to killing and dismembering the fifth-grader after kidnapping her on her way to school on October 5, 2012.

He sat emotionless. Newsflash to the shrinks...the kid is a psychopath!

On another side, I am glad he admitted his guilt. I don't know why he wasn't tried as adult though. IMO, the charges warranted it.

Yes Deb... glad he pled guilty... avoids the time and expense of a long trial.

Maybe the "tried as juvenile" was part of the deal?

You would think that they would have mentioned it in the article. Maybe that's how they do it in CO. I don't know. Those charges better not be consecutively.

Jessica Ridgeway case: Day 1 of sentencing hearing for confessed killer Austin Sigg
Posted: 11/18/2013
Deb Stanley Deb Stanley, TheDenverChannel.com Team

WESTMINSTER, Colo. - It was a disturbing and emotional day in a Jefferson County courtroom Monday as the two-day sentencing hearing began for Austin Sigg, the teen who confessed to kidnapping and killing Jessica Ridgeway and trying to kidnap a jogger at Ketner Lake.

The morning started out with disturbing details about the murder and dismemberment of the 10-year-old girl as a psychologist spoke about Sigg's interviews with police and other records.

The day turned emotional in the afternoon as the police chief and school officials talked about how Jessica's kidnapping and murder scared children and parents throughout the community. Then Jessica's family and friends talked about the precious little girl they lost in October 2012.

Sigg is facing more than 40 years in prison for the murder of Jessica Ridgeway and the attack on a female jogger at Ketner Lake. While Sigg is 18 now, he was 17 at the time of his crimes, so he is not eligible for the death penalty.

-- Psychologist: Sigg not a psychopath --

Austin Sigg is not a psychopath, but has psychopathic characteristics, according to a psychologist who testified Monday.

"I don't believe he is a psychopath," Dr. Anna Salter testified Monday.

Thanks, Rumpole, for posting my "heads up".

A close friend of mine is good friends with Jessica's mother, Sarah (my friend's daughter was in Jessica's class at school), and is sitting in the courtroom during the sentencing hearing in support of Sarah. I received a text from her late this afternoon -- she said that Sigg's mother is having a really rough time (can you imagine what that would feel like?). Prayers for both families would be appreciated.

I'll post if I hear anything more. I'm sure I'll talk to my friend later in the week.

Thank you HD for reminding me about the case. It did drop off my radar.

I did not know of your own link to this case... my condolences to all concerned with it.

It is always sad. People talk of "closure" once a perp gets convicted and sentenced... and I guess there is an element of that, but nothing changes the horrible events and the fact that a life is gone.
