Casey Anthony lawyers attack motion to move bankruptcy to Orlando

Jose Baez, Cindy Anthony oppose transfer motion; Roy Kronk supports it.

By Jeff Weiner, Orlando Sentinel
6:35 p.m. EST, February 25, 2013

On the eve of the first hearing in her bankruptcy, attorneys for Casey Anthony on Monday blasted the woman suing her for defamation as a publicity seeker, in a harshly worded new court filing.

At a hearing Tuesday in Tampa, attorneys for Zenaida Gonzalez will ask a judge to move Anthony's Chapter 7 proceedings to Orlando, arguing Anthony only filed in Tampa to avoid media coverage.

In a new filing, Anthony's lawyers concede they're concerned about media coverage: Orlando, they argue, is the "epicenter" of antagonism toward their client, who continues to receive threats.

They argue Gonzalez has no legitimate civil claim and is "one of many profiteers who, in a misguided quest for publicity and financial gain, seek to capitalize" on the high-profile case.

Gonzalez sued after Anthony falsely said a similarly named nanny had kidnapped her daughter in 2008, linking Gonzalez to the high profile case.

Anthony bankruptcy lawyer: Delay hearing on transfer to Orlando
February 24, 2013|By Richard Burnett, Orlando Sentinel

Citing unexpected personal and professional developments, Casey Anthony's bankruptcy lawyer has asked a Tampa federal bankruptcy court to delay a hearing over whether her case should be moved to Orlando, court records show.

In a motion filed last week, David L. Schrader of Tampa asked for the Feb. 26 preliminary hearing in the Anthony case to be rescheduled because he has been hit with an unanticipated workload on a corporate bankruptcy case involving Mirabilis Ventures Inc., the former private equity firm based in Orlando.

Man handing out pamphlets during Casey Anthony trial gets 145 days in jail

ORLANDO, Fla. — A man was sentenced to 145 days in jail for handing out pamphlets outside the Orange County courthouse during the Casey Anthony trial in 2011.

Chief Judge Belvin Perry designated a special area for public protesting, and he held Mark Schmidter in contempt because Schmidter didn't use the designated area.

In December, an appeals court shot down the designated area but agreed court protesters could not distribute things outside court.

Schmidter's lawyer plans to challenge Thursday's re-sentencing.

Statement Analysis: Casey Anthony and David Wright
Monday, February 25, 2013Orlando

Driving through Orlando, we did not drive by the Anthony home that has become so infamous the last few years.

Always noting what one says in the negative is a good practice. It's always important. There is a reason someone tells you what they did not do, rather than what they did.

We did not drive by, but thought of Caylee, and how short her life was and how it was traded for the 'hot spots' of Orlando, and a chance to punish an equally narcissistic grandmother, who showed more concern over placing a cat for boarding on a weekend, than in checking to see who was actually watching Caylee.

We experienced the Orlando heat, and thought of that tiny face, drugged, and in the trunk of a car, struggling to breathe fresh air, but finding no relief.

We saw billboards that reminded us of the case, including Mark NeJame' larger than life picture. We talked about how he had kind words to say about the statement analysis of the Casey Anthony case Heather and I had worked on. It is what we choose, deliberately, to remember about him.

Everyone remembers Casey Anthony, and locals talk about where she might living...California, New York, and so on.

George Anthony, chronically underemployed, stopped working when Caylee died, and yet seemed to be able to make mortgage payments and feed himself. Cindy cashed in on Caylee's blood too. Lawyers built careers and people fought for 15 minutes of fame, even if it meant posing to 'accidentally' stumble upon a diner.

This is where Lee Anthony first introduced himself to America when he placed an ad for someone to be his 24 hour, 7 day a week, slave, of whom the applicant would have to have a college degree; something Lee thought important enough for his slave, but not for himself, a working car, a clean driver's license, and by the way, no wages whatsoever. Lee Anthony thought so highly of himself that he believed someone would take the job just to bask in his glorious presence.

You know, being a sibling to a murder might just mean a reality show.

[....]

Caylee would be old enough now to enjoy Spring Training and know what it means to get an autograph in 2013.

She'll never know the joy.

She'll never perform in a dance recital, or go to a junior prom, or be a bride's maid, go to college, or be privileged to be a parent.

Casey made certain of these things.

Caylee will never know the boundless joy of being a child, amazed at the wonders of God's earth.

Yet it is that George, Cindy, Lee and Casey will never have to work a honest day in their lives, for Caylee will provide for them, though she, herself, will never be thrilled with having her breath taken away at an autograph, or an evening walk in the beach.

Casey made certain that only she, Casey, would take away Caylee's breath,

and never return it.

Thank you, David Wright, for doing something better than most everyone else on the planet, while taking the time to make an eleven year old boy smile, and give him something to tell his grandchildren about.

Orlando has moved on, and there are those who don't feel the same sting they felt when the bitterness of injustice shocked the senses in the manipulated verdict that had followed perjury under oath.

"So help me, God", said Cindy Anthony, adding to the oath the emphasis, setting her feet to slide in the appointed time by employing the Name in vanity.

Until then, however, the sun will shine upon the beautiful beaches and life will go on for most of us.

Caylee is not forgotten, even as we drove through her hometown. David Wright helped me, as a father, not think about the murder, for a few hours today, of which I am grateful.

I am grateful.

Casey Anthony bankruptcy case to stay in Tampa
Published On: Feb 25 2013 12:39:35 PM EST Updated On: Feb 26 2013 11:13:28 AM EST

ORLANDO, Fla. - A judge denied a motion on Tuesday from Zenaida Gonzalez's attorneys to move Casey Anthony's bankruptcy hearing from Tampa to Orlando.

Lawyers for Gonzalez wanted Anthony's bankruptcy case moved from Tampa to Orlando. Roy Kronk, the Orange County meter reader who was a witness in her murder trial, joined the motion to move the trial on Monday.

US Bankruptcy Judge K. Rodney May ruled that Casey Anthony's bankruptcy case will remain in the Tampa division.

"There is a publicity factor that is extraordinary," May said on Tuesday. "It's beyond the ordinary."

Attorney Scott Shuker, who represented Gonzalez in court, argued that since Anthony has listed her home address as Hopespring Drive and since 27 creditors live in Orlando, the case should be transferred to the Orlando division.

Anthony's bankruptcy attorney David Schrader argued that 65 percent of the creditors are outside Central Florida. He said holding the bankruptcy hearings at the "epicenter of publicity" in Orlando would put Anthony's life in danger and that security arrangements have already been made with the US Marshal in Tampa for next week's creditor meeting, which Anthony is expected to attend in-person.

He also argued he works pro-bono and Tampa is more convenient for him.

Casey Anthony: Latest chapter will be behind closed doors
posted by halboedeker on February, 26 2013 1:55 PM

Casey Anthony will be back in the news Monday, but whether she’ll be seen is another matter.

Her bankruptcy case will stay in Tampa, a federal judge ruled Tuesday, citing security concerns. Zenaida Gonzalez and Roy Kronk, who are suing Anthony, had wanted the case moved to Orlando.

Anthony will be required to attend a hearing with her creditors Monday afternoon in Tampa, WESH-Channel 2 said, relaying an NBC News report.

WKMG-Channel 6’s Mike DeForest, reporting from Tampa, noted that the hearing would take place behind closed doors.

Can we expect a media frenzy?

Probably not. She might be seen entering or exiting the building, but her attorneys may want to keep her shielded.

No cameras are allowed in the courthouse, and reporters won’t be able to bring electronic devices in, either. Unlike Anthony’s murder trial, Monday’s hearing won’t be aired on television or streamed online, so viewers will have to rely on reporters who attend the hearing in person.

Anthony’s attorneys say she has just $1,000 and a few pieces of furniture, DeForest reported, adding that a court-appointed trustee hinted that Anthony may have other assets.

Scott Shuker, Gonzalez’s attorney, told WKMG that he would probably take Anthony’s deposition. “Then we’ll decide whether we’re going to sue her to have our debt pass through the bankruptcy,” he said

Casey Anthony to appear in public Monday for bankruptcy hearing
Judge orders Anthony to appear at hearing

UPDATED 7:49 AM EST Mar 03, 2013

TAMPA, Fla. —Casey Anthony will finally come out of hiding Monday after a federal judge ordered her to appear in court.

Anthony will attend a bankruptcy hearing with her creditors Monday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in Tampa.

Last week, the judge denied a request to move the bankruptcy case to Orlando.

Attorneys for Zenaida Gonzalez and former meter reader Roy Kronk are both suing Anthony and asked for the move.

Anthony's bankruptcy filing effectively blocks the two lawsuits from moving forward.

WESH 2 News will be live in Tampa starting on WESH 2 News Sunrise and we’ll have the latest updates on WESH.com.

Casey Anthony out of hiding Monday, faces questioning in bankruptcy
Casey Anthony required to attend creditor's meeting in Tampa

March 2, 2013|By Jeff Weiner, Orlando Sentinel

She's been living in hiding since her acquittal, the subject of tabloid reports, online leaks and rampant speculation.

But for the first time since her murder trial, the media and public on Monday afternoon will know exactly where Casey Anthony is: at a creditors meeting in Tampa for her recently filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

During under-oath questioning, Anthony could be forced to shed light on what she's been doing, and who's been supporting her, since her acquittal in her daughter's death in July 2011.

"She has to have food; she has to have shelter. Who's paying for that?" said Kenneth "Chip" Herron Jr., an Orlando bankruptcy attorney and former Chapter 7 trustee.

She could also have to answer a question trial-watchers have had since her murder case concluded: Does Anthony have any plans to profit from her story?

A bankruptcy trustee's primary function is to identify and sell nonexempt assets, the proceeds of which are distributed to creditors — the people owed money by the person filing for bankruptcy.

The attorneys interviewed for this story are not affiliated with Anthony's case. Her lawyers couldn't be reached for comment.

At a creditors meeting such as the one Monday, the trustee's job is "to question the debtor about assets that they have, and... about their financial activity in the recent past, looking back probably a couple years," said Peter Carratt, a Tampa-based bankruptcy lawyer and debt counselor.

Video: Casey Anthony arrives at bankruptcy court in Tampa

TAMPA -- Casey Anthony has arrived at the federal courthouse in Tampa for a meeting with the creditors in her bankruptcy case in Tampa.

Casey hid her face from a flurry of photographers as her attorney, Cheney Mason, walked her under his arm throughthe crowd to the front door of the courthouse around 10:30 a.m. Monday, three hours ahead of her 1:30 p.m. hearing.

Casey pulled up at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the back of a black SUV. She was wearing a large-brimmed hat in an attempt to cover her face. Only Mason and an unidentified driver was in the vehicle with her.

The driver was not allowed to use the courthouse's garages to drive under the building. Casey was made to walk in the front door, just like everyone else.

Cheney Mason had his arm around Casey, shielding her face from the cameras. Casey wearing a black jacket. Her hair is dark, about shoulder-length.

Mason is not representing Casey Anthony in her bankruptcy hearing. It appears he accompanied Casey to court to show his support and protect her from the media.

Casey Anthony filed for bankruptcy in Florida in late January, claiming about $1,000 in assets and $792,000 in liabilities. Court papers list Anthony as unemployed, with no recent income.

Casey has not made any public appearances since she left jail after being acquitted in 2011 of murdering her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee.

The bankruptcy filing came on the same day that a Florida appellate court set aside two of the four convictions she faced for lying to detectives during the investigation into her missing daughter.

On the list of people she may owe money to include her former attorney Jose Baez. She could owe him up to $500,000.

Also on the list is Zenaida Gonzalez, the woman suing Anthony for defamation and Roy Kronk, the meter reader who found Caylee's body in the woods.

Casey Anthony: WFTV’s Kathi Belich turns up the drama
posted by halboedeker on March, 4 2013 12:48 PM

“Quite a scene,” WFTV-Channel 9 anchor Jorge Estevez said as Casey Anthony arrived at the Federal Courthouse in Tampa.

Well, yeah, and WFTV’s Kathi Belich added a lot of drama to the scene. She may have topped her memorable shouting at Anthony in 2008.

Back then, Belich yelled: “Casey, did you kill Caylee?” In commercials, WFTV frequently repeated that footage, which featured Jose Baez shielding Anthony.

Belich gave her station even more material Monday. “Casey, did you get away with murder?” Belich shouted. “Did you get away with murder? Do you think you’d be better off if you pay a price?”

Anthony attorney Cheney Mason could be heard angrily saying, “Get out of the way.” Anthony wasn’t talking.

WKMG-Channel 6 anchor Matt Austin saw “one intense walk into the courthouse” and said Mason moved like a linebacker. WESH-Channel 2’s Bob Kealing marveled that Mason moved like a fullback.

But there was more Belich. She chased Anthony down the street and shouted, “Did you get away with murder, Casey?” Belich was dogged and a bit like Madame Defarge, too. You’re going to see a lot more of that footage. I’m not sure it adds a lot to the coverage, but TV likes dramatic pictures.

Anthony had emerged for a bankruptcy hearing in Tampa. “It is the first time Casey has been forced out in public since being acquitted of killing her daughter,” WFTV’s Steve Barrett said.

WESH anchor Jason Guy noted that it was Anthony’s first public appearance in two years.

WKMG’s Tony Pipitone highlighted that Anthony claimed to have $1,084 in assets and debts of at least $792,000. The attorneys for Zenaida Gonzalez were the creditor expected to ask the most questions in the Monday meeting, Pipitone added. Gonzalez is suing Anthony for defamation.

But there was more attention to how Anthony looked. “Just look how flustered she appeared once our cameras caught her inside the door,” WFTV’s Estevez said.

This really isn't important, but just seemed odd to me. In the photos entering the courthouse, she's wearing black stockings and leaving she's bare legged... Maybe she wet her pants...

She probably didn't take them off because she was warm. It was freezing in South Florida today , so it must have been freezing in Tampa, too.

The look on her face when she saw the camera was priceless. (walking into the courthouse)
