I love the odd, little efforts regarding how this war was lived and won. From the victory gardens to the inflated tanks, etc, set up and overseen by Patton in Northern England in the build up to D-Day as part of Operation Overlord.

will check out link ... love the mention of victory gardens.

The 1943 steel cent has always stuck in mind as a symbol of the significance of World Events in every aspect of our lives. My maternal grandmother was a Secretary in one of the defense offices in Chicago during WWII and many men served so it's fascinating to see the stories I grew up with taking on historical significance.

I love these stories. My maternal grandmother was a "Look what you are fighting for" pin up girl in the "Stars and Stripes", I still have the original she kept. She worked at Wright/Pat the entire war. She wanted to be a combat nurse, her mother told her no. She remained a civil servant until she retired as the Generals secretary at Naval Avionics.

One has to be in the mood.. inspired :cool

I'll copy the little bit i mentioned in the chat thread.

One of the features for me 1st months in singapore.. was all the WWII sites.. especially Changi Prison Museum...
Photos on display included about 10 taken and developed by POW on hidden folding camera.. using film squares cut from Xray plates.. developed with homemade chemical concoctions. Photos later used as evidence in Japanese War crime trials.

I bought a book.. story plus copy of photos...

Changi Photographer... George Aspinall's Record of Captivity

If you google I am sure some of the photos are online.

This was a "kid" who went to war with an interest in photography and a very early camera.. he did learn to develop his own photos by helping out at local photo shop in Changi (I have been to where that shop was).. one of his early work-details as POW was clearing out Singapore harbor warehouses for the Japs.. and he had sense to score some xray film which he cut into squares to fit camera (Single shot loaded in dark of night). He also scored some developing chemicals. If he took a photo he had to remove and develop himself.. and load another square at night for next days shot. Lucky the shots worked at all. Lucky he kept camera hidden through multiple searches. At the end the camera and photos were dropped/buried down a long-drop latrine.. but eventually recovered.

There are similar stories on Jewish side, only they were hand made cameras, worn within clothing, then buried in the ghetto they were evacuated from, dug up after the war. Ithinkthey were buried in milk cans. As iamnot at home, I will have to find the book I am of speaking of then.

My husband put it on my "List" .... will watch it soon. :)

Looked for it on YouTube, but it is still pay-per-view.

There were even fake cities! Mock ups of large cities to throw off bombers. They'd bomb a well lit up area, thinking it was an actual city. Pretty cool. Saved many lives and many buildings.
