Scenes of Chaos in Baltimore as Thousands Protest Freddie Gray’s Death
By SHERYL GAY STOLBERG and ASHLEY SOUTHALLAPRIL 25, 2015

BALTIMORE — A largely peaceful protest over the death of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man who suffered a spinal cord injury in police custody, gave way to scattered scenes of chaos here on Saturday night, as demonstrators smashed a downtown storefront window and damaged police cruisers, while officers broke up skirmishes and made arrests near Camden Yards.

Hours earlier, a racially diverse and mostly calm crowd of demonstrators marched through the streets, clogging intersections, carrying signs and shouting, “All night, all day, we’re gonna fight for Freddie Gray!” Some had come from New York and Ferguson, Mo., and authorities here had warned against “outside agitators” coming to stir up trouble.

Mr. Gray was arrested on April 12 after making eye contact with a police lieutenant and then fleeing, according to the police account. He was tackled by police officers, who held him down and handcuffed him before dragging him to a police van. A bystander recorded the arrest on video using his cellphone.

Until Friday, efforts to pinpoint how and when Mr. Gray was injured had focused on what happened inside the van, with a lawyer for the officers involved playing down the suggestion, based on the cellphone video, that Mr. Gray had been hurt before he was placed inside. In the video, Mr. Gray can be heard asking for assistance while on the ground and screaming while being dragged to the police van.

The police acknowledged gaps in the timeline involving three stops made by the van. According to Police Department accounts, at the first stop, officers placed leg bars on Mr. Gray, who they said had become irate; the second stop was made to pick up another arrestee. At the third, Mr. Gray had to be picked up off the floor.

Mr. Gray’s family said that his spinal cord had been 80 percent severed, and that his voice box had been crushed. He died at a hospital last Sunday, a week after his arrest.

Freddie Gray Should Have Received Medical Care Before Ride in Van: Police
By Elisha Fieldstadt

The 25-year-old black man who died of apparent spinal injuries a week after an arrest by Baltimore police officers should have received medical attention before he was loaded into a police van, police said Friday.

Officers pinned Freddie Gray to the ground on April 12 after a foot chase and then put him into a police van and drove him to the station. He died in the hospital a week later after his spine was allegedly injured at some point during the arrest.

We know he was not buckled in the transportation wagon, as he should have been. No excuses for that, period," Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts said Friday. "We know our police employees failed to get him medical attention in a timely manner multiple times."

The Baltimore Riots Begin…. Overnight Chaos Thread
Posted on April 25, 2015 by sundance

It was inevitable. On the same night the White House correspondents dinner took place – Baltimore Maryland began riots on behalf of Freddie Gray (note the sponsors):

I missed a lot of what went on last night because of a power outage. What little I saw and then read about afterwards, it was NOT peaceful. I noticed lots of people filming the looting with their phones (unlike in Ferguson) and there are a ton of vids now on YT.

Earlier in the day, this happened in broad daylight while protests were getting started.

As many times as this has been tweeted, I've seen no mention of the "flying chair" in the background -- which was the first thing I noticed. :Gslap

Watched this to see if it's Deray filming (at 1:56). They say yes, I say no .. not his face, not his vest, not his style. But not going to argue about it. :98

The point is, THIS happened during the day in front of LEO .. I just don't get it.

LOVE the RedBull tables. I want! :D

These few photos outside the ballpark speak volumes. AND I'm thinking there were a couple of "WTF is Freddie Gray?" moments yesterday.

Baltimore Safari Park

Not surprising that the "franchise" is being taken up in other cities.

The appeasement made Ferguson Safari Park a working notion.

Hey, Rumpole. I saw the term BaltimoreSafariPark™ in a post this morning at CTH. ;)

Don't think I can follow this story much longer. Nothing positive has happened during the week. Also read where family has asked for none of this and there was some kind of ruckus at Gray's wake today. :40

Saw a pic earlier today of the older man in the plaid shirt being taken away. He was beat up pretty bad. Can't deal with seeing people just standing around watching this nonsense. Don't like the violence that seems to be increasing. May need a twitter break. :(

Baltimore Police Receive Death Threats From Same Group Who Killed NYPD Cops…

Baltimore police are warning that there is a “credible threat” to “take-out” law enforcement officers, according to a press release from the Baltimore Police Department. The Black Guerilla Family is the same group who put out the call to assassinate police in New York City resulting in the death of NYPD officer Rafael Ramos and Officer Wenjian Liu.

I hope the end is near but I fear another "Ferguson" no matter the outcome of the investigation.

Amazing set of folks in Baltimore.

Mayor Rawlings-Blake let’s the cat right out of the bag by inviting “Al the Agitator in Chief” Sharpton in to help bring about a peaceful outcome. And just wait until the violent criminals find out that the good mayor called them thugs and idiots. The thugs are not well versed on the nuances of the war and will not like the mayor’s words.

And what!? Paddy wagon is a derogatory term? Did anyone else know this? Does anyone know why paddy-wagon is a derogatory term?

I am off to watch Bates Motel where the outcome looks brighter than in Baltimore.

I watched the cops being driven back, and injured by "kids" throwing rocks etc.

UNBELIEVABLE

Even "outnumbered" Cops should be ALLOWED to maintain order against just a mob of ignorant kids? Group-think takes over a mob.. but its easy enough to "turn"

Where was the pepper spray? Tear Gas".... tasers? GUNS even? I am told Water canon is no longer an option.... shame in my mind.
