I recall the SPECTACLE of 1999 WC opening in Cardiff.. Shirley Bassey wearing a dress styled on a Welsh Flag, singing World in Union... Tom Jones, Brynn Terfel, Catatonia, "Max" Boyce etc... live show augmented by Welsh crowd singing.. I was spoiled

I listened/watched what you posted in WMusicAYLT thread. Beautiful! Read where the song was recorded due to high wind, and Bassey & Terfel were able to enjoy and have more fun, wave to the crowd. I really like her flag dress, nice! It is interesting to see a snippet of an opening that long ago, loved seeing the children singing on the field too.

Japan pull off greatest shock in World Cup history
Rugby World Cup 2015 Pool B: South Africa vs. Japan
ESPN Staff, September 19, 2015

South Africa 32 - 34 Japan

Image
Ayumu Goromaru of Japan celebrates scoring his teams second try.

Japan pulled off the biggest shock in Rugby World Cup history with a stunning 34-32 win over South Africa at the Amex Stadium in Brighton.

Karne Hesketh's 84th-minute try capped a mesmerising performance from a side usually playing the role of group stage cannon fodder as they somehow beat the two-time champions.

The underdogs, who have three players in their squad who were not even born when Japan last won a World Cup match in 1991, instead created a shock which will rank among the most remarkable in rugby - and indeed sporting - history.

Just checked on Points system used ( see reference thread)

4 points for a win.
2 points for a draw.
1 "bonus" point for scoring 4 tries (or more).
1 "bonus" point for losing by 7 points (or fewer).

Just a thought....

In an open running game.. lotsa tries for both sides

A losing team COULD score 2 bonus points :)

(Lose by 7 or less and score 4 tries)

BTW... with the SHOCK upset win by Japan... all bets are off in Pool B

USA (and others) in Pool B have more chance than they ever had before of progressing to next round.

If Japan can beat SA.. ANYTHING is possible.

Image

NOTE
I was just "pontificating" when I opined that a losing side COULD still gain 2 points.

South Africa did exactly what I suggested... :cool

Lost by less than 7 ( bonus point), and scored 4 tries (Bonus point)

Japan won the game, but did not score 4 tries (points from 5 penalties) so japan dont get a bonus point.

Wales 54 - 9 Uruguay

Wales could have done with even MORE points.. this pool could come down to a point difference comparison

MY WC focus remains on WALES getting through to quarter finals ("As Long as we Beat the English")

THE most important game of the entire tournament will be.....
26th SEP
England v Wales
19.00 GMT, Twickenham

http://www.theguardian.com/sport/ng-int ... -wallchart

Pool standings currently
Image

If things go to "plan" from here on..............
Assuming Aust may well win all their games.. 2 of them with bonus points likely.. so they will top table with 16 - 18 points.
If Wales beat England they should score 13 - 15 points and come second :)

England may well beat Uruguay as they did Fiji, even with bonus both games they get 10 points only

Mind you.. Wales could beat England, but England COULD beat Australia...All 3 top teams winning 3 games a piece :doh

The whole pool could wind up dependent on bonus points or even total score margin for and against :95

Then of course... be NICE if Wales Beat Australia ("As long as we beat the Aussies")

The SECOND most important game of the Tournament:
10 OCT
Australia v Wales
16.45, Twickenham

Wales bring in Tyler Morgan after Cory Allen ruled out of World Cup

ESPN Rugby | September 21, 2015

Wales' World Cup squad arrived in London on Monday ahead of a crunch clash against host nation England - but not before they lost another player through injury.

Cardiff Blues centre Cory Allen was released from the squad after suffering a hamstring injury during Wales' 54-9 victory over opening tournament opponents Uruguay.

Allen, who scored three tries before going off injured, will be replaced by Newport Gwent Dragons' Tyler Morgan. The 20-year-old was part of Wales' training group, but he did not make the final 31-man cut last month.

Allen, 22, had become only the fifth Wales player in World Cup history to score a hat-trick of tries before departing the action in Cardiff on Sunday.

What a great tribute. Williams was certainly a slippery noodle, with speed :)

LOL! I noticed in the video that they wore the original, loose-fitting polo jerseys, unlike today.
So if yours is skin tight, you'd fit right in.
No smoking on the pitch. :smoke

:D

My Welsh Jersey looks to be same as JPR wearing on "cover" pic of tribute YT.
Back in the day... when players were amateurs and Jerseys were not used as advertising billboards :roll

Image

JPR along with several other players from the 70's were/are the LEGENDS of Welsh Rugby. Famous as players for Wales, and for The British Lions, when Welsh players comprised MOST of the players in the "British Lions" touring team... made up of players from the 4 home unions ( England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales). The British Lions toured NZ in the 70's... my formative years. JPR was a key player involved with the HISTORIC WIN by the Lions over the NZ Allblacks.

Quote:
Following the third Test the Lions led the series 2–1. The final game played in Auckland would require an All Black victory for New Zealand to draw the series. A draw or Lions victory would give the Lions a series win. Scores were level 8–8 at half time with a try, conversion and penalty each. The first 15 minutes of the second half saw the Lions land a penalty goal and the All Blacks score a try. With the scores tied 11–11, Lions fullback JPR Williams received the ball 45 metres out and attempted a drop goal, it was successful and put the Lions ahead 14–11. Williams's drop goal was the only one he landed in his Test career. The All Blacks could only manage three further points from a penalty to draw the game and give the Lions the series

JPR also spent some time living here in Auckland, as Dr/intern. Working/studying at Auckland hospital and Auckland University medical school. He was (it is said) a bit of a lad and a drinker back in those days.. I was attending Auckland Uni in early 70's and working there after that..so amazing our paths never crossed? :cool

Quote:
John Peter Rhys Williams MBE FRCS (born 2 March 1949) is a former rugby union footballer who represented Wales in international rugby during their Golden Era in the 1970s. He was known universally as J. P. R. Williams (or sometimes just as JPR, to distinguish him from teammate J. J. Williams, also John). Playing in the position of fullback, he was noted for his aggressive attacking style. With his long sideburns and socks around his ankles, "JPR" was an iconic figure on the legendary 1970s Wales team.

He is one of a small group of Welsh players to have won three Grand Slams including Ryan Jones, Adam Jones, Gethin Jenkins, Gareth Edwards and Gerald Davies.

An orthopaedic surgeon by profession, Williams has continued to be involved in rugby since retirement, currently serving as President of the Bridgend Ravens.
