2nd Test, Day 2
New Zealand 178 (50ov)
Sri Lanka 88/4 * (32 ov)
Sri Lanka trail by 90 runs with 6 wickets remaining in the innings

NZ commentary team seem to have been watching a different game from me?
They see 178 (all out in 50 overs) as a "good score" for NZ?? They say things are "even" but NZ slightly ahead?
I am always pleased to see some wickets on the first day.. and the game progressing (especially when rain may cost time), but one team all out in not much more than half a day is NOT good.. either the team is crap or/and the pitch is crap. The pitch looked to be playing OK(ish) to me, and so I have to say NZ were CRAP!!. The pitch was "green" and likely to cause some early trouble for batsmen... that is why Sri Lanka put NZ in to bat. NZ went on to collapse after losing the few early wickets. (Southee's innings (68/64) makes the team score look better than it really was generally). Sri Lanka lost 4 wickets as well (shit happens), but they can recover, knock off the deficit, and put on a first innings lead.
I would agree that at the moment the game is "even".. but I would give Sri Lanka a slight lead now.. and a good chance to build on that. We'll see! :roll

ETA
TWO THREE FOUR FIVE SIX quick wickets... SL letting me (and themselves) down :doh
Note last 6 wickets fell for just 10 runs.

NZ have "all the time in the world" (3 days) to win this match.... weather permitting... gnomesayin? :cool
They could declare NOW.. with Sri Lankan target being 305... but I imagine they will bat some more today to increase their lead and the Sri Lankan Target?

As usual... commentators seem to me to be "away with the fairies" :roll
Talking about 3 full days still to go.... no thought of even thinking about lost overs (rain). Also suggesting NZ bat all day (maybe declare and bowl 10 overs at SL at end of the day).... cautioning that even a lead of 500/550+ SL could get??? The history of test cricket., let alone common sense would refute that. NZ could declare RIGHT NOW... certainly by lunch. SL are NOT going to chase down 400, let alone 500+ :roll

NZ need to realise... the ONLY way to win this test match is to take another 10 SL wickets. They can not do that while batting!! :roll
Two batsmen standing in the middle is not really any use at all. They need to declare (or get out) and get on with the ONE JOB they have... which is to bowl at SL and get them out!! (x 10). As is OFTEN the case... NZ might need to be BOWLED OUT for their own good. :roll
They are likely to bat all day... fine if it's entertaining style batting lots of 4's and 6's... each batsman with SR 100%, but might well just drag on all day at 2 runs/over.

DOT BALLS at this stage are crap!!! :doh

NZ - GET ON WITH IT!!

I wondered if you thought they should declare and WHEN?

Thanks for the info. It is a bit ridiculous to keep on batting, even I am getting worn out at this point.

Does Williamson converse with the Coach/Manager then decide?

--------------------------

Yesterday I saw a statistic that said "Latham was 5th behind Harry Nipples." :cool

Don't even remember what the stat was now, but after thinking about it for a while, I decided to take a chance and Google "hairy nipples" :eek (instead of asking you, Rumpole) :lol to find out which player they were talking about.

Spoiler:
I didn't take the time to read the backstory, but it's Henry Nicholls. ;)

Declaration is the CAPTAIN'S decision.... Williamson gets all the blame :)

I see they are STILL batting after tea,,, I hope NZ lose now :cool

Rain stops play over next 2 days is what they deserve

CAN Sri Lanka survive 2 full days of play? Probably not!! This thing could well end very quickly with a Sri Lankan batting collapse.
I am a bit miffed because NZ batting on to a 660 run lead was "over kill", and it would be "poetic justice" if they now ran out of time. :roll

Maybe rain? (wishful thinking) :roll

It is good to see a test match go into a 5th day but..... this game was really done on Day 3 and so it's been a bit of a farce stretching it out. Williamson COULD have declared at the start of day 3 (300 runs ahead). I understand his reluctance to take that much of a gamble... it is a TEST MATCH... but certainly the declaration could have come around lunch time.. and likely the game finished on day 3, maybe early day 4. Batting on to a lead of 660 before declaring was silly. It only tends to turn fans off. If the thought was to "entertain the crowd" with de Grandhomme swashbuckling bash batting... I think Test Cricket fans would have been FAR more entertained by NZ bowling at SL to take the 10 wickets. NZ leading by 600 without de Grandhomme... so his innings added nothing to the match situation. Big hitting in the context of what is needed in a test is great, but there is already more than enough gratuitous bash batting provided by white ball cricket... Big Bash games every night for those fans at the moment. Test cricket CAN be enthralling to Test fans for the entire 5 days... but it can also get very boring when it is stretched out for no good reason.

It could be a welcome change to see some rapid scoring after watching several (slow) Test matches.
I hope the players (an the pitch) are up to it :)
Now as we build towards the World Cup.... player places in the WC squad are being evaluated, and the players themselves need to rehearse WINNING approach to ODI play.

As I usually say.....ODI these days requires an innings of 300+ to make the game exciting (and no loss of wickets).... so RR around 4/5 early on (to be improved on later)

On the individual level... regardless of how many runs they score, batsmen need a SR of 100% when they get out. Dibbing and dabbing and "getting your eye in"... and going out with a low SR just puts more pressure on subsequent batsmen to "make up" for your slow batting.

--------------------
Ross Taylor(rhb) 75/94 SR 79.78
Commentators praising Taylor's innings miss the point (again)
With an average SR around 80% (like Taylor has)... the team would score only 240 total.. That is CRAP! :roll
With Taylor occupying the crease for a third or more of the total balls available, others have to make up for his lack of scoring.... or he has to.

5th Wicket
LRPL Taylor run out (Perera/†Dickwella) 90 (105b 4x4 1x6) SR: 85.71
New Zealand 265/5 * (44.1 ov)
So... Taylor DID NOT make up for his own low SR :roll
Being run out is deserved since he ran Munro out. :)
Good news for NZ.. Taylor out.

JDS Neesham run out (Pradeep) 64 (37b 5x4 3x6) SR: 172.97

Final Score: New Zealand 319/7 * (50 ov) (RR 6.38)

Good ODI Innings is largely about Individual Batsman's SR/Overall team RR

Given an OK pitch and fine weather.....
As always... an OK ODI score these days is 300+ A run per ball minimum.
Which requires a TEAM average SR of 100%+ A final score of 300+ RR 6+ runs/over
There is (of course) a need for players to simply not get out... for the team to last the full 50 overs, but they need to score runs as well.. else lasting 50 overs will not be sufficient.
Of course players can score at a slower rate initially (but not for more than a few balls faced).... but if they go out with a SR below 100% they put a burden on subsequent players to "make up" for what is in effect balls they failed to score off.
Managing a good SR as well as NOT getting out it what make a good (or great) batsman.
In practice...
Any batsman can "fail"... get out without scoring many runs, but provided he has a SR 100+ he has contributed to a good team final score. At least, at worse, if a batsman does get out with a low SR... it is better for the team if it's a short innings.
eg Guptilll SR 40% was at least only 5 balls... so in effect, only 3 balls not scored off.
eg Munro only scored 21 runs, but at SR 150% also an ok innings.
Taylor and Williamson SR 72 and 54. They NEED to make up for that.. soon... if they go out at that SR they have failed!
The longer they occupy the crease at those rates... the more pressure they put on following batsmen

Commentators continue to push the old (wrong) narrative...
Stuff about batsmen pacing their innings... with a view to upping the rate later. :roll
In my experience over many years watching... the "later" part fails to eventuate (more often than not). Of course with wickets in hand the rate can be increased later, but the foundation and the bulk of the runs needs to come from the players picked as "batsmen". TOP batsmen need to provide the top batting. If lower order batsmen have a successful "bash" later... that is a great bonus and/or can make up for earlier failures...... but not a factor that can be relied on.

Having said all that... then NZ are doing OK at the moment. The two early wickets were a blow that they are now past. Williamson and Taylor doing OK... RR 5.35

Williamson OUT 55/65 SR: 84.61 (at that rate team total would be 260)
Illustrates what I am trying to say... the so-called Top batsmen are scoring at less than the team require... so later players have to make up that deficit, as well as push on to post a good team score. The longer the top players bat... the more the effect. In fact scoring a century and more at such a rate is quite selfish (Taylor looks like taking 112 balls to score his 100, using up more than a third off the balls available to the team to score a PERSONAL milestone... but at a SR that achieves a losing team total 270). The "Top" batsmen use up a lot of the available overs.. limiting the balls the lower order have available.
If Taylor can now "cash in" and end with a SR say 110%... all will be forgiven :roll
(but that is unlikely)

I find Henry Nicholls 69*/57 SR 121.05 to be far more impressive :roll
(I hope he scores a proper century)

New Zealand Innings wickets

1st Wicket
MJ Guptill c Mendis b Malinga 2 (5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 40.00
New Zealand 16/1 * (2.1/50 ov) (RR 7.38)
--------------------
2nd Wicket
C Munro b Malinga 21 (14b 4x4 0x6) SR: 150.00
New Zealand 31/2 * (4.4/50 ov) (RR 6.64)
--------------------
NZ have tended to do this over the years. :roll
Lots of "talent" but failures follow good innings
No consistency.
First 2 early wickets are a setback.. we'll see how NZ go from here.
--------------------
PREDICTION (3x25 ov)
New Zealand 139/2 * (25/50 ov) (RR 5.56) ===> Final Score 417
--------------------
3rd Wicket
KS Williamson c de Silva b Sandakan 55 (65b 6x4 1x6) SR: 84.61
New Zealand 147/3 * (26.2/50 ov) (RR 5.58)
Obviously an OK innings, but Williamson is NZ's TOP batsman. He FAILED to to achieve SR 100+
--------------------
PREDICTION (2x30 ov)
New Zealand 161/3 * (30/50 ov) (RR 5.36) ===> Final Score 322
--------------------
PREDICTION (2x35 ov)
New Zealand 200/3 * (35/50 ov) (RR 5.71 ) ===> Final Score 400
--------------------
Image
Ross Taylor
--------------------
4th Wicket
LRPL Taylor c de Silva b Malinga 137 (131b 9x4 4x6) SR: 104.58
New Zealand 301/4 * (46.2/50 ov) (6.49)
--------------------
Image
Henry Nicholls
--------------------
END OF INNINGS

New Zealand 364/4 * (50 ov) (RR 7.28)

Centuries
Henry Nicholls 124*/80 SR 155.00 (at that rate team scores 465)

LRPL Taylor 137/131 SR: 104.58 (at that rate team scores 312)
(and Taylor was OUT.. so not there at the end to score at all).

See what I mean? :cool

T-20 not my thing. :roll

I assume 150-200 is a good score? Either a bash fest or all-out trying?

Remember.. an average SR of 100% would only achieve 120 total.. so in T20 players need BETTER than 100%
2 early wickets not looking good for New Zealand :roll

Make that 3 wickets down... and Taylor next :doh
New Zealand 21/3 * (2.5/20 ov) (RR 7.41)

Munro was looking good for 6 balls...... then he went out :wall
New Zealand 27/4 * (3.3/20 ov) (RR 7.71)

Taylor out.. as usual not a score that helps the team.. ( at Taylor SR, team would score only 107 total)
LRPL Taylor c †Dickwella b NLTC Perera 33 (37b 2x4 1x6) SR: 89.18
And Taylor used up 37 of the 120 balls available.
New Zealand 102/6 * (14.5/20 ov) (RR 6.87)

New Zealand Innings done....
New Zealand 179/7 * (20/20 ov) (RR 8.95)

NZ recovered thanks to some good SR at the end

Innings Break

Target for Sri Lanka 180 (Req. RR 9.0)

Doing OK for a while... but batting collapse and all out in the 17th over...

New Zealand 179/7
Sri Lanka 144/10 (16.5/20 ov, target 180)

New Zealand won by 35 runs

Sri Lanka move on to Test Series V Australia
