Yeah, I saw the over count first thing and thought WTF?
Then read they stopped match because of light. Even have a light meter?
That would tell me to, uh... maybe start the game earlier?

This would help me out. LOL

BAD LIGHT... was a common excuse to end test match days... back in the day... sometimes in NZ (back before daylight saving)... but more so in UK. It is of course made worse by overcast weather generally.

Problem with "starting earlier" is they already start (often) at 10:00 am... so you have problem with light that end too.. and wet outfield if it's been wet overnight etc. They do (in some places) start a half hour early (if they can) to make up overs lost the previous day.

Did you read this, Rumpole? Wow!

Quote:
What a stirring comeback that was by Australia.
They were looking down the barrel with SA 220 for 2,
only for Pat Cummins to inspire a fightback during the
final couple of hours as six wickets went down for 37.

Australia own up to ball tampering

Cameron Bancroft charged with altering condition of the ball; Steve Smith says senior players hatched plan to gain an advantage

https://www.cricket.com.au/news/cameron ... 2018-03-25

-------------
Ball tampering is NOT NEW! And I have no doubt it has been used by international sides intentionally :roll
But this incident is blatant, and the first time I recall it has been admitted to as a premeditated team plan.
Bancroft will likely be suspended for a period? I would expect Smith to lose the captaincy and perhaps also be suspended?
Maybe other players (and team management?) as well since Smith has said it was "Senior management group" decision

You were right! :(

Cricinfo just announced:
Quote:
Meanwhile, across the ditch, the Australian government has called for Steven Smith to be removed as Australian captain following the ball-tampering incident in the Cape Town Test.

ETA: I showed Chris the pictures and article. He said "just like the Major League Baseball pitchers" but I explained that Smith admitted to knowing, unlike the MLB players who lie. Lots of liars in the US.

Watching Sky sports news.. Australia

Seems Smith is saying he wont resign... so he will need to be removed. Who will replace him?

Trouble is... other senior players eg Warner also implicated. Marsh is a possibility?

Incident being compared to "the underarm incident"... only WORSE. Chapell was said to have worked against the "spirit of cricket"... but it was agreed he was within the law ( LAW SINCE CHANGED). This incident is cheating.. knowing it was against the law.

There are even rumblings about Australia forfeiting this game. The ball was tampered with, not replaced and so Australia have unfair advantage.. comparable to sportspeople doping with performance drugs etc.

--------------------
Tim Paine was installed as interim captain to complete current game.

ICC penalties: Steven Smith banned for one Test, and fined 100% of match fee. 4 demerit points on his record.
Bancroft given three demerit points fined 75% of match fee

Smith, Warner could also face life ban from Cricket Australia

Smith, Warner and Bancroft to leave South Africa
(Darren Lehman remains as coach)

Steven Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft will leave South Africa on Wednesday in the wake of their pre-meditated plan to tamper with the ball on the third day of the Cape Town Test against South Africa. They will be told of their "significant" Cricket Australia code of behaviour sanctions within 24 hours.

However the investigation of the CA head of integrity, Iain Roy, found that the coach Darren Lehmann had no prior knowledge of the ball-tampering plan. This is despite the fact he was captured on television footage sending a message to Bancroft via the 12th man Peter Handscomb, leading to Bancroft attempting to hide the adhesive tape he had been using to rough up the ball. James Sutherland, the CA chief executive, said Lehmann would remain under contract and had not resigned his post.

Australia named Matt Renshaw, Glenn Maxwell and Joe Burns as replacements for the fourth Test in Johannesburg starting on Friday. Wicketkeeper Tim Paine, who led the team on the fourth day of the Newlands Test after Smith and Warner were stood down as captain and vice-captain, becomes the Test team's 46th leader but his further tenure will depend on the sanctions handed to Smith and Warner.

I would say "Ban all 3 players for life" if not for the fact that there have been past players (and Captains) from other Countries "tampering with the ball", and I dont recall any of them "banned for life"... just various periods of suspension from games.
This incident is a bit different with (daft) Smith admitting that it was a "premeditated" plan (by leadership group of players), but other incidents likely were as well... they just didnt own up to it..

So... I think all 3 should be suspended from all games in the next Test series... whenever that is?

THE MOST INFAMOUS AND WORST BALL TAMPERING INCIDENTS IN INTERNATIONAL CRICKET
( The vid misses quite a few that I vaguely recall over the years.. Pakistan and bottle tops springs to mind)

Cameron Bancroft, Steve Smith, Sandpaper, Yellow Tape ball tampering saga at Capetown has brought the game to a new low with deliberate and planned cheating by the Australians vs South Africa. Steve Smith has been banned for one test match. Here we take a look at some of the previous ball tampering episodes in international cricket with Sachin Tendulkar, SHahid Afridi, Faf Du Plessis, Umar Gul, Michael Atherton, Waqar Younis, Wasim Akram and many more

Wow, really interesting video. :eek
I'm missing something on "why there is sticky on my dicky" ... is that where Bancroft pulled the yellow sticky tape from? :cool
That under the arm and across the face maneuver was icky.
Skipper with the zipper was telling.

Even the guides on safari live are talking about the incident ... while on the drives. :roll

There have been lots of other incidents over the years. Pakistani use of bottle top to gouge the ball comes to mind (vaguely) and later NZer Chris Pringle trying the same trick (to get his own back)... but being caught.
Some incidents may not have clear video record.. but players seen and taken to task.

BTW
A point I meant to make.. even before this ball tampering incident.
Commentators often OPINE about how nowadays you dont see "swing" (especially reverse swing) like in the old days. They have suggested ball manufacture is somehow "different". The explanation seems obvious to me :cool
There are a LOT more cameras... and higher resolution.... normal ball tampering is MUCH easier to detect and so that has, to a large extent, knocked ball tampering on the head, and so the ball unlikely to produce swing.

Smith, Warner banned for 12 months by Cricket Australia

Steven Smith and David Warner, formerly captain and vice-captain of Australia, have been banned from playing international and domestic cricket for 12 months by Cricket Australia for their roles in the pre-meditated plan to tamper with the ball during the Cape Town Test. Warner is banned from captaincy for life, and Smith for 12 months after the completion of his ban. Cameron Bancroft, the player caught tampering with the ball, was banned from playing for nine months and from captaincy for 12 months after the completion of his ban.

CA has said that the plan was devised by Warner, the foreign object used was sandpaper, and that Bancroft and Smith lied publicly in their post-match press conference in referring to it as adhesive tape. The full charge sheet confirms a raft of misdeeds by the trio, under which they have been charged with conduct contrary to the spirit of the game, conduct unbecoming, conduct harmful to the interests of cricket, and conduct bringing the game into disrepute. The basis for these charges includes the following:

I've been reading a lot about the ball-tampering scandal today, and it is so sad to see the coach resigning.
Smith's crying did not affect me like seeing the coach cry. I'm sure it's like losing family for him to leave the team.

The more I read, the more it makes me angry.
I just want to know what made them think that cheating was okay?

Cheating has always been around.. and arrogance.... and even when caught the penalty has not been much.

This applies to all sports... I guess it's a bit worse when it's cricket.. which was supposed to be "the gentleman's game"... high ethical standards etc. Batsmen who "walk" when they know they are out, rather than hope the Umpire "makes a mistake" etc

Various players have lamented the (slight) demise of "the spirit of cricket" and have themselves maintained a high standard (Adam Gilchrist comes to mind).. other players have at times seemed to have a more arrogant... "whatever you can get away with is ok" attitude. I think Warner (and Smith) went that way. (Bancroft just a silly boy.. turned to the Dark Side)
I think it is GOOD that "the dark side" of cricket has been dealt a blow. A deterrent to others. It wont fix it in all teams.. but it might slow it down.
I think the punishments were about right. The players should be thankful they avoided a LIFE BAN.

Lehman going is BEST.. for cricket... for Australia... and ultimately for himself. He left with honor.. of his own volition.
