I hear talk of Australia batting well into the afternoon.

At the risk of repeating myself... I do think consideration should be given to the weather. It may well be that the players and offiocials have more detailed forecasts...but in the face of HEAVY rain predicted tomorrow... I would be at least TRYING to get the game won today.

A 3rd new ball is available... 160 overs means another 80 bowled with current ball.

1 over bowled with old ball, new ball taken now....

England 346
Australia 499/4 * (161 ov)
Australia lead by 153 runs with 6 wickets remaining in the 1st innings

I would like to have one of those new balls. Ebay sells old ones, I'll look again.

Love to see Aust. get 250 ahead by lunch but the way batting now (continuous hitting), maybe your 350 ahead is possible. :)

A maiden over just as I type this. :doh

England have a spin bowler (Mason Crane) bowling with New Ball from one end.

This is not usual... it could end in tears if Australian batsmen get on top of this slow bowling and hit a few boundaries :)

Crane replaced by Moeen Ali.. so England are persising with spin from one end with new ball.

Rumpole, you know my middle name is "patience" but this 1st session got on my nerves. I'm taking a long lunch break to calm down a bit. Even my commentators said something about England "not being in a hurry" this morning.

When S Smith repositions the fielders, he does it quickly and they get on with the game. I've never seen the likes of Crane "directing traffic" (this is what they were calling it) like he was doing and it taking forever -- when he was bowling AND between bouts.

If they had picked up the pace Australia would be much more ahead (duh, I know that's a given). I think my commentators predicted 280 by lunch early on.

Yeah.

It does happen in cricket that when you cant win.. you try and "save" the game and play for a draw. That often does involve using up time. England are already SLOW, as I have pointed out. With Spin bowlers from one end they should have done MORE than 30 overs.

You know my view... slow play should be punished with runs awarded to opposition.. and even more so when it is a "professional foul" so to speak.

Consider:
England have "stolen" 4 overs (or even more) already and they can do similar in the next session and 3 overs will be "lost" to an innings break. 11 overs could change the outcome of the game.
The good news is... the overs lost to slow play today can be made up by Australia bowling "over time"
The other good news is that the English batsmen are stuck out longer in the HEAT... getting physically and mentally worn down just before they bat :)

The smart money is on Australia declaring just before Tea.

The bad news is... Marsh out :(

6th Wicket
SE Marsh run out 156 (291b 18x4 0x6) SR: 53.60

Australia "tail" is now batting.... that is BOWLERS who need to be fresh and rested when they bowl at England :doh

7th Wicket
MA Starc c Vince b Ali 11 (10b 0x4 1x6) SR: 110.00

No point Bowlers hanging about batting :)

Australia have declared

England 346
Australia 649/7d * (193 ov)
Australia lead by 303 runs on the 1st innings

Minimum Ov. Rem 54.0 (less innings break)

FYI - Math
England only bowled 10 overs in the (almost) hour since lunch :doh
Even assuming they had time to bowl 1 more if Aust had not declared.... they were short 4 overs in just half a session

52 overs remaining after the innings break

What we need now is WICKETS... lots of them....4 before Tea.... another 6 after tea :cool

Why did Aust. stand so close to the batsman near the end, the last 2-3 overs? In the slip area.

One thing I was hoping is that Eng wouldn't score 100 today, so I'm happy. ;)

And the English commentators were making a BIG DEAL of "minutes ticking off the clock" as Khawaja waited for his helmet. The irony.

How close slips (and others) stand.. depends on type of bowling (eg slow spin bowling) and the pace the ball is coming off the pitch, how much its bouncing etc.
All of that likely means fielders move closer as pitch deteriorates over the days of play.

ALSO....
Standing close generally is more of an attacking move.. trying to take wickets.. as opposed to spreading out to maybe concede a single, but cut off a boundary.
---------------
Those English commentators are now doing a naked rain dance around their studio.... hoping that rain ticks HEAPS of minutes off tomorrow. :roll

-----------------
IF this was sure of being a 5 day test match.... Australia would be almost certain to win.
BUT...... I have seen rain at Sydney before. Last year it rained for 2 days solid and game was abandoned. The previous year ended in a draw after time lost to rain.
So... based on history it has been 3 years since rain DID NOT determine the outcome of a Sydney Test :roll

5th Test Day 5

It all depends on the weather :)

It's still dark in Sydney (4:30 AM), but when it gets light here is a link to a LIVE webcam..

Rose Bay, East Sydney (near SCG)

Pre-match BS Show

Weather looks OK :)

Talk of Root going to hospital today, but back at the hotel now. I ASSUMED it was related to his damaged finger, but apparently he had "severe dehydration". I now see calls for cricket games to be called off for "hot conditions"... poor old England had to field yesterday in 42 deg heat. :roll
Talk about "Whinging Poms"!!! :Q44
Cricket is played in places where it is HOT.. as bad as, if not WORSE than, Sydney yesterday... COPE WITH IT!!!! :cool
In fact... BE THANKFUL for a nice sunny day, albeit hot.... far better that than friggin rain!!! There are valid reasons why the game can not be played in the rain, or even on a wet field.. I get that.. but am often FRUSTRATED by games effected by time lost to rain. For heaven's sake the game (at least proper MENS cricket) does not need "Temperature Rules" and thermometer Nazi's concerned for player "comfort" :doh

ETA
Root en route (pun intended) to the stadium. He will not bat at start of play (retired hurt) but WILL bat later if needed.
