Two positives to this draw.

England could NOT stop Smith.
Australia denied England a shot at their first victory in Australia since January 2011.

The good news is.... the prematch show has started....

The BAD news is.... commentators standing in the rain with umbrellas!! :wall

ETA
Toss at 11:00, Play to start 11:30.... maybe :roll

ETA 2
Ummmm... rain again as Captains were about to go out for the toss :doh

ETA 3
Toss 12:10. Play 12:40. No lunch break

Schedule shows 83 overs to be bowled today. They gain half an hour (8 overs) with afternoon session starting at 12:40, rather than 1:10 pm. And I assume they plan an hour overtime (15 overs) as well... Stumps at 6:30 pm?

I assume they will start half hour early tomorrow (10:00 AM start) and gain another 8 overs, and so make up for overs lost to rain this morning.

Thanks for updates, Molly :)

Overs Math
Given the scheduled overs remaining plus those bowled already, it looks like total at stumps today will be 176.3
I guess they "lost" 3.3 with an innings break? And so they are close to having made up for overs lost to rain yesterday morning?

WEATHER looks to me to likely wipe out (mostly) day 5, and so I am as always worried about TIME... and a draw... we'll see :)

5th Test, Day 3

IMO it makes sense to assume there will be no play on day 5. This test needs to be played as if time runs out at the end of day 4.

As always... my advice is "bat like hell".

Australia need to knock off the deficit and put on a lead that they can defend while taking 10 English wickets. That is Austalia need to plan to NOT bat a second innings at all (at a pinch a token few runs to make in a 2nd innings). With that in mind, they need to bat a little more as they would in an ODI. They need to bat, say 80 overs today and put England in for 10 overs at the end of the day. If Australia can manage a RR of say 4, then they will lead by 170. A little better than RR 4 would be better still. :)

It's Pink Day at the SCG, in honour of the McGrath Foundation.

5th Test, Day 3 - LUNCH

England 346
Australia 277/3 * (95 ov)
Australia trail by 69 runs with 7 wickets remaining in the 1st innings

Minimum Ov. Rem 62.0 (2 short for the session)

Shame that Smith was out just before lunch.. and he was short of a century.

Australia are progressing OK ... if this were a 5 day test... but I fear it wont be, and so I see a DRAW looming :(

5th Test, Day 3 - TEA

England 346
Australia 365/3 * (127 ov) RR 2.87
Australia lead by 19 runs with 7 wickets remaining in the 1st innings

Minimum Ov. Rem 30 (they caught up missed overs from session 1)

As I said... Australia on track to set a target for England.. and bowl them out, but....At the current rate, Australia will need to bat 2 sessions or more tomorrow and are unlikely to bowl England out on day 4. And... day 5 may be rained out.
We''ll see... Australia may bat like hell in the final session today?

If there is play on day 5, Australia have a good chance of a win.

Michael Clarke is suggesting that Australia will have "enough" runs by lunch tomorrow. (A lead of 250+?) And COULD bowl England out in the afternoon two sessions tomorrow..
I guess that might work.. and there is always (perhaps) some play on day 5 to mop up the Poms.

5th Test - Day 4

IF rain were not a factor, this looks like an almost certain win for Australia.

They could bat half of today and gain an unassailable lead (350+) and would have a day and a half to bowl England out.
That may well be how things go. They could even achieve that today (regardless of the weather tomorrow) if they bat aggressively to set the target by around lunch time today, and declare, and bowl England out over the two remaining sessions today. Even if they don't quite achieve that today, there is always the possibility of at least some play tomorrow.

Australia have got this :roll
