You've taught me (I think) that when a player has a low SR as in Smith's 25.00 ... that it's better to be out and let the next up to bat in lieu of wasting overs. Or was Smith not in there long enough for a low SR warranting a need to be out?

Or am I overthinking? ;)

Long ago you used Taylor as an example... many times.

Yeah... "overthinking" ... a bit :)

My point generally.. that when a player is not scoring (around a run/ball in most games) then he is "wasting" every ball he faces and does not score a run. Commentators will say "he can catch up later"... which is true in theory.. but it almost never happens. If a player is scoring slowly he mostly keeps scoring slowly... until he gets out. That of course leaves the "catching up" to later batsmen. They have to do that catching up ON TOP OF scoring their own run/ball (so to speak)
In the case of Smith.... today was not his day... he faced 16 balls and scored only 4 runs... and so (in effect) he "wasted" 12 balls... that's 2 whole overs. It would have been ok if he had stayed.. and DID catch up... but if he had stayed and faced another 50 balls still at the same rate... Australia would be well behind the RR required.

I should add....

People getting out to "make way" for another player who can score at a better rate does have it's limits. :)

It is IMPORTANT to bat the entire 50 overs. No point team scoring at a really great average SR (100%)... if they are bowled out in 40 overs and so only score 240 when they require 300 (to set a target, or in a chase to make 300)

Thanks again.

Yeah, I wasn't thinking "getting out on purpose", but more ...justifying a wicket as a "good wicket" for the batting team.

I realize now, after two nights of crazy cricket, why it is a "funny old game".

It's never the same. ;)

Yeah... losing a wicket is generally "bad"... but in the sense I describe.. its sort of GOOD if a player is "bogged down" as they say.

Dont sweat on this game... Australia have "got this"

They only need 52 runs off 132 balls, and they still have 5 wickets in hand.

They would likely win even if Jeff Sessions was next batter up :)

Now THAT is funny. :84

My husband just asked "How is the game going?" :cool

All I could say is "Australia is winning after three straight losses to England."

No sense in trying to explain. ;)

This Game is the DEBUT of the new Perth Stadium.

The famous WACA Cricket ground remains, but it is not being upgraded and so will not be used for big international cricket games.

I don't understand using the drop-in pitches. :roll

Pitch and conditions

The pitch, a drop-in, will be largely an unknown for its first international. It may be expecting too much for it to be a Perth flyer. The forecast is for a hot day and this is the only day-game of the series so there won't be much relief from the heat.

Drop in pitches...

For one thing... many cricket grounds are used for other sports and other events.... it is impossible to tend a pitch area properly in the off season and even in the build up to a cricket match.. weeks/months.... for the sake of the cricket.
Also the "other sport" is not necessary well served by a large patch in the middle of the playing area that is HARD and sparsely grassed :cool

Also... large stadiums (especially with roofs) do not provide sufficient sunlight to do precision grass growing. :)

Well that ALL makes sense. I didn't realize particular stadiums are used for different sports. Saw an aerial of the cricket grounds the other night with a big beautiful stadium next to it... I guess for soccer and rugby. I think it was Australia.

Thanks for the info. :)

Yeah it depends.... on finances especially... larger cities do have other venues for different sports, but even so there is a LOT of investment to provide a BIG stadium to cope with large crowds, for 1, 2, 3 sports that attract INTERNATIONAL games.... even if they do provide several different basic playing areas for many sports... stands and viewing area to cope with crowd sizes attracted to local games.

Cricket is seasonal.. and even the big venues only have a few International games (big crowds/big money makers) per year. They do, of course, play local cricket games... but even with that there would be months with stadium not in use... if not for other sports.

Even the MCG... The Melbourne CRICKET Ground... has another life outside cricket season as a venue for "Aussie Rules Football"

Australia won the toss and...... will bowl!!

Smart move... totally unknown how this pitch might play... and Australia get first chance to use any early quirks... which will likely even out later. :)

espn in regards to the pitch:
Some curious green streaks all down its length, will doubtless assist the quicks to some degree. But for how long?

Australia:
David Warner, Travis Head, Marcus Stoinis, Steve Smith (c), Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Tim Paine (wk), Mitchell Starc, Andrew Tye, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood

England:
Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Alex Hales, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan (c), Jos Buttler (wk), Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid, David Willey, Tom Curran, Jake Ball
