As Day 4 is about to start...

I have to say I always fear a test match will run out of time, end in a draw. This is probably down to me watching NZ play when I first started watching :roll
Also RAIN often shortens time available in most places around the world (not this match I hope)

To get a result in this game... scores about even, we still have 2 innings to get through and only 2 days. But... the bright spot is that England have already lost 2 wickets... may that continue today and see England all out some time after tea (if not before). Likely gaining a lead of only 200 (or so) which Aust SHOULD be able to better :cool

At Lunch...
England 302 & 302 & 119/5 (43 ov)
Australia 328

England lead by 93 runs with 5 wickets remaining

3 wickets falling in 1st session is a good result (for Australia)

At Tea....
Game was dribbling on... England looked to be on track to bat on and get a competitive total (220+)...but.. TWO wickets fell in "last over" before tea and so play continued with only one wicket remaining intact.. and that fell within 2 overs. So at Tea England "all out"

England
302 & 195 (71.4 ov)
Australia 328

England lead by 169 runs, target for Australia 170 runs

This game could well be concluded TODAY!! :eek

At Stumps...
The game went about how I predicted :cool
England were all out just after scheduled Tea Time.. and they had a 1st innings lead of 170.
It's a shame that Australia did not manage to finish them off tonight.. but the result is a foregone conclusion with 0 wickets down and only 56 more runs required.

FYI The Barmy Army
Have LONG been what English cricket supporters call themselves (Barmy Army name also adopted by English Rugby fans)... They are avid fans usually follow the English cricket team as a "mob" at venues all around the world.. especially Australia... they have chants, and songs... they LOOK like perhaps a "white Nationalist mob"... but they are NOT noted for violence (like soccer fans are).

Still... knowing their look, and disposition, it amuses me GREATLY that silly BLM rioters use the well known Barmy Army (white Nationalist) chant...

Everywhere we go... people want to know.... who we are... etc :)

In case you wonder WHY (in Australia only) they often burst into (1st verse of) the English National anthem "God save the Queen"

The lyrics are...

God save our gracious Queen!
Long live our noble Queen!
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen.

KNOWING that in Australia there is a "Republican" strain who don't recognize/ like the rule of the English Queen....

The Barmy ARMY change the lyrics to
"Long to reign over YOU!"
"God save YOUR Queen"

as they point at the Aussies in the crowd :)

As commenters are saying....
It is somewhat a strange decision for England to chose to bowl first. They are clearly banking on bowling Australia out cheaply, perhaps even bowling them out today, before end of play.Even if all goes well and they bowl Australia out today... they will likely have to then face a few overs themselves later... under lights for say 10 overs or so.

Australia, on the other hand, just have to survive to gain the upper hand. If, for instance, Australia can survive to lunch with no wickets down (or even just 1 or 2 down) they will have an advantage

Makes sense to me, Rumpole. I can't hear the announcers.

Obviously, I was glad to see AUS batting. :)

After the 1st Test (2nd innings) I was hoping Warner would get a century.... close but no cigar.
He's due, so fingers crossed for one (or two) in this Test.

;)

I made it until dinner. It looks like they didn't play ANY extra time. You were right saying 10 or so overs would be needed, 9 would have done it. ;)

2nd Test.. Day 5

NICE to see a test "go down to the wire" :)

On Day 5 either side COULD win...

England require another 178 runs

Australia require 6 wickets

I was thinking earlier... can't believe I watch a game that can last 5 days. ;)

It's been a while since I've watched a Day 5 between two teams where I have a favorite. Probably a year ago.

Yeah, that never gets old. ;)

I'd like to see ENG get close, but no cigar. But you know that. LOL

I guarantee that if ENG win the toss in Test 3, they will bat. :)

ENG won the toss and elected to bat! LOL Glad I wasn't proved wrong. ;)

Day 1 looks decent. Good score with wickets to spare. Enough overs.

YAY, something to do tonight. Thanks for the reminder, I missed yesterday.

Yeah Molly.... as ALWAYS I am nervous at the start of a Test match... that it will run out of time... end in a draw.

If one team can survive say close to 2 days and score 500+.... so can the other :cool

One should not make predictions at least until the second side gets a turn :)

GOOD for side batting first if they get a large score....AND bowl the other side out fairly quickly, but.. chances are if a pitch allows 1st side to get a big score... the 2nd side will do the same, using up time.

The THEORY is that a good test wicket might be a bit tricky to bat on for first half hour or an hour... then good for batting after that... but gradually deteriorating over subsequent days, so perhaps 2 sides can make large scores in 1st innings and score less in each second innings... the side batting LAST having the worst of it.

ETA
Just heard... "some rain forecast Sunday and Monday"..... which ADDS to my concerns :doh

ETA
2, 3, 4, 5 quick wickets falling (before lunch) changes things .. a bit

So things changed completely in space of 20 minutes.... Funny old game cricket :roll

They may play an extra half hour before lunch.. since only 1 wicket remains.

3rd Test Day 2 - LUNCH

England 403/10 (115.1 ov)

Eng all out so Innings break over lunch

As Ian Chappell pointed out... by going out (with a good total) England likely increase their chances of a win.

This confirms what I was saying... batting on and on with no wickets falling is NOT the best way to move a game along :cool

It is GOOD for BOTH sides that England's 1st innings is done. BOTH sides can win from here... plenty of time (Rain permitting)

The way I see it.... Australia need to "get on with it"... score while wicket is at its best for batting... match England's score, even score a 1st innings lead. It looks likely to me that TIME will be lost with rain...
