Australia have to AT LEAST survive and use up time. (Save the game....get a draw)

India have a lead, so Aust also have to wipe off that lead to make India have to bat again. Naturally if Australia do not survive to Stumps, they need to at least bat on to a "target" that India can not make in the time left.

So far so good. Australia did lose 2 wickets in the morning session, but their innings is continuing now into the second session.

Australia 451 & 108/4 (50.0 ov)
India 603/9d

Australia trail by 44 runs with 6 wickets remaining

(Min overs remaining 48)

8.50am All this drama around India selection has taken focus away from the pitch. There is a tinge of grass on the pitch, but there are dry spots aplenty. A new-ball pitch for the quicks. Dry underneath. Disconcerting turn expected third day onwards. So once again, the toss is crucial, and at least according to the experts, all the talk of pace and bounce might be unfounded

8.45am From early indications, India have gambled in this Test. They might have replaced Kohli, a batsman, with a left-arm wristspinner. That is not what Australia must have expected. However, you know with wristspinners; when they go right, they go right awesomely; but they can also go wrong

8.41am Sanjay Bangar, the batting coach, confirms Kohli is out. He hasn't made it. So that makes Ajinkya Rahane the 33rd Test captain for India. Not yet sure who Kohli's replacement is. What we know so far is that Kuldeep Yadav, the left-arm wristspinner, is in

This is going to sound silly, but please answer because I really don't know. ;)

Why only 10 overs in almost an hour's play?

Slow over rate... not punished by ICC... me a Rigor Richardson been banging on about it for years :roll

It's going to be 12 overs by the time an hour is up, that is still 3 short of 15 I know!

I'm guessing it is always the bowlers side who causes a slow over rate?
Changing batsmen after a wicket or reviews take up time, but none of that in the past hour. Well one player change.

Thanks.

The "Buck stops" with the bowling side... there is actually provision to punish the bowling captain... in ODI for instance fines are occasionally imposed. I dont recall fines with Test matches? But maybe they have been imposed?

Quote:
Punishment for slow overrate:
As per ICC's rules, a captain will be fined 20% of his match fee per one over for the offence. Each player of the team is also fined 10% per over.
A captain of an international side will be suspended for one match if his side is guilty of two minor over rate offences in the same format over a 12-month period.

Of course there should be consideration for unusual circumstances.. such as a player injured or just hit on the head etc... but there is no excuse like that today.

The prescribed MINIMUM number of overs is NOT a big ask... they should be able to bowl more... certainly absorb the time taken when wickets fall.. sixes hit over the boundary etc.

Australia 131/1 (31.0 ov)

So... India made up the slow over rate of 1st hour. Which is good.... but it shows that with spinners bowling (and the team trying harder) 19 overs in an hour is easily achieved. :cool
