The pitch is "A Road"... but it may not stay that way for long. It could break up quickly...dry flat, with cracks and a crumbling surface.... and Pune is apparently a hot and dry sort of place.

This pitch may well turn to dust?

Designed to suit Indian spin bowlers :roll

Thanks. I am just happy to see Australia bat. :)
And Smith playing again. Just looked at forecast for Pune. HOT, 36 the next five days.

Great to see Warner batting in a cap (no helmet)... He is happy to do that with slow bowlers both ends

when helmets first became the thing it took me a long while to get used to it. Cricket looked very different.. In the old days...playes opted for no head-wear, or a cap like Warner.. or even the cricket brimmed hat. I found it harder to even recognise players when they all started wearing helmets.

Interesting re the cap! I remember watching hockey when they didn't wear helmets, so know what you mean by not being able to recognize them. Especially Test games with no names on the back.

I keep looking for Kohli (c) in the field. I think he is waiving his arms a lot and wearing sunglasses. They all look alike (except for man-bun). He also bowls so may know it's him if he bowls today.

If I have seen a no-ball and a 4, it's been a while b/c I can't remember. I miss a lot too.

Why are there so many playing in the slips?

And in Test, how many overs before the restrictions are lifted for the fielders where they can spread out more?

Yeah... Kohli the Indian guy with a beard, wearing sunglasses

More in slips is an attacking move.. done at start of tests.. and continues so long as batsman likely to nick a ball.

Whether the Capt sets a more spread field is down to tactics.... trying to take a wicket or be more defenseive... the field usually spreads if batsman starts hitting boundaries.

NO LIMITS such as you suggest (inner circle) in test cricket. There are limits to fielders "behind square on leg side"...at all times.. a bit technical to explain... since the "body-line" controversy (1932) :cool

Thank you!

There are limits to fielders "behind square on leg side"...at all times

I will look this up tomorrow.

Everything else makes perfect sense.

When I was first learning, when Brendon McCullum was batting, I remember a fielder was always in either the silly slip or the short leg, and it would bother me that the fielder seemed to be "up in his face". Don't remember what type of match.

I need my space, I guess that's why I notice their position up close.

Thx, Rumpole. I'm out of questions. ;)

Yeah.. simply putting batsman off can be part of the reason

I went for dinner... return to find 2 new batsmen :eek

I see Renshaw "retired ill" :roll

Hard to beat India at home.. when they gerrymander a turning pitch AND the opposition team gets the usual Dysentery (Delhi Belly)

Rumpole's tip:
DO NOT EAT THE PRAWNS(Shrimp)
I remember a SERIOUS bout of Food poisoning.. after eating giant prawns at "Sammy's Place" (Indian) in Singapore.

I did not know that happens in India. I imagine your dad had the experience at one time or another. :roll

We call it TD (Traveler's Diarrhea) and it is most prevalent in Mexico. So many young, naive, uninformed newlyweds spend thousands and travel to Mexico for their honeymoon, unaware of the affects, and spend the entire time .... well, not on the beach in the moonlight or in bed. :cool

I know, O/T. Sorry

Yikes, I hope Smith and Marsh come back from lunch with more vigor. Pretty bad start.

(I'm allergic to Prawns)

Yeah... between the two of Us..... that about ends any appetite for "Lunch" :lol

India is FAMOUS for food poisoning/dysentery .... they invented it LOL

Wiping out teams.. teams forced to call on ex-player in the press to make up fielders etc.

When reporting cricket in India "The Runs" can have a new meaning.

STUMPS - Day 1

Australia 256/9 (94.0 ov)

With spinners bowling most of the overs, India managed an OK over rate. Bowled more than 90 overs

How good the Aust total is will not be revealed until India have a turn at batting, and we see how they do batting on this pitch that is set up to suit Indian type (spin) bowling attack. Naturally Indian batsmen too are used to turning pitches, but the Aussie fast bowling attack may give them a few problems? We'll see.

It's early days.. but the pitch does NOT look as bad as the Aussies made it out to be.

I don't like Steve Smith's tactic of opening with a spinner at one end. India did that because.. spin is what Indians do. IF Australia have an edge it is in their seem attack. They should (IMO) be full-on seam attack from both ends.. while bowlers fresh, the ball is hard and new!

Things are perking up.. Kohli out for a duck... Starc got him

WHY the F did Aust piss about with spin bowlers to start???

I am not saying that Aust should have a spinner on at one end now... but they SHOULD have opened with Starc and Hazelwood.. full-on attack.

Australia 260
India 44/3 (14.4 ov)

India trail by 216 runs with 7 wickets remaining in the 1st innings
