Bob Willis: Former England cricket captain dies aged 70
1 hour ago

Former England captain Bob Willis has died at the age of 70.

The fast bowler took 325 wickets in 90 Tests from 1971 to 1984, claiming a career-best 8-43 to help England to a famous win over Australia at Headingley in the 1981 Ashes.

He captained England in 18 Tests and 29 one-day internationals before his retirement from all forms of cricket in 1984.

In a statement, Willis' family said he had died "after a long illness".

"We are heartbroken to lose our beloved Bob, who was an incredible husband, father, brother and grandfather," the statement continued.

"He made a huge impact on everybody he knew and we will miss him terribly."

Willis subsequently worked as a summariser on BBC TV before joining Sky Sports as a commentator in 1991.

NZ Batsmen with most career runs.

The Current test NZ V Australia, includes Ross Taylor with a chance to take a NATIONAL NZ RECORD.

Taylor is currently 7128, which is second to Steven Fleming 7172
so Taylor needs 45 runs. He could have done it today.. except he crapped out for 4 off 28 balls :roll

Image
http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine ... ;type=team

I assume Taylor will get to the top of the list soon? But there is Williamson close behind, and still playing who may catch Taylor. The lead may change. Depends on how much longer people play before retirement. Also Wattling and Latham, both still playing, likely will move up the list

I make no secret of the fact that I am NOT a huge fan of Taylor....and it does not sit well with me that he should be labeled as "New Zealand's best batsman of all time" He is simply NOT!! He is OK, and I can not deny the statistics.
One reason is that some of players I remember (over the last 50 years) did not play so many matches. There were not the same FINANCIAL rewards back in the day. Cricket is fully professional now... and WELL PAID.

Taylor FAILED... for this test at least 4(28) and 2(4)

For context... NZ's best are well down the list for ALL NATIONS

-----------------------
UPDATE - 3rd TEST
Taylor gets another chance in 3rd Test

SP Fleming 7172
LRPL Taylor 7152

Taylor Out for 22 in 1st innings
Still needs 21 runs in this 2nd innings.

TAYLOR TAKES THE RECORD

He made 22 runs... then out next ball :wall

He is the leading test run scorer in the history of New Zealand cricket :doh

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine ... ;type=team

------------------
I know I am biased against Taylor... but my memories are of Taylor striving for PERSONAL milestones, rather than some score the team is striving for. In fact often making his personal milestones in games that New Zealand LOSE (like now) :roll

He did it AGAIN!!
Made his "milestone" then got out.
What NZ TEAM NEED is a big ask, but they have HOPE. They need to bat all day today at least... there is just a chance it will RAIN tomorrow and NZ could save the game (draw)
Taylor could have still "made his milestone", but batted more time.

--------------------
WILLIAMSON could go past Taylor eventually?

ICC plan to end five-day Tests would remove all that is best about cricket
Barney Ronay, 7 Jan 2020

The tone of the game flows backwards from the possibility of five days – just look at Dominic Sibley’s century in Cape Town

No. No. No. And also: no. Not even: no thanks. Not later or maybe or let’s see. This is simply a hard, flat no. And indeed an angry and reproachful no, too. When it comes to the ICC’s suggestion that four-day Test matches may be the future of international red-ball cricket there is only one sensible response. That response is an aggressive, concerted and righteous rejection.

This is an informed no, too, a no that understands we live in a sporting world dominated by greed and short-termism (otherwise known as the commercial or “real” world). Change and compromise have been the dominant notes of cricket’s evolution over the last few years. A great many lines that shall never be crossed have already been cheerfully discarded, often with no harm done in the process.

(Test matches 'should not be tinkered with', says Sachin Tendulkar)
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2020/ ... -tendulkar

Four-day Tests might look like something similar from this distance. A bit of a do about nothing. Just another dimly felt note of contraction. How much easier simply to shrug and move on.

Except this is something else entirely. The four-day Test goes to the heart of the most basic question facing this delicate, enduringly beautiful sport. Does cricket exist to make money or make money to exist? Make no mistake. The shift to a four-day game, driven purely by the lure of reducing expenditure, would end Test cricket in its current form. So much for all the talk. Here it is. The real death blow.

Warne's baggy green cap sold for more than $1 million

Shane Warne's baggy green cap has sold, with the last visible bid at $1,007,500 before the auction closed on Friday morning, after a late bidding frenzy resulted in the price being doubled in the final 18 hours.

The price tipped over the $1 million mark just two minutes before the auction was to close at 10 am on Friday with the winning bid made after the designated close.
