Rumpole's after-lunch report :cool

I see Latham and Raval have mediocre form going into this match. Low averages over the past 10 matches. Raval did OK(ish) today with 43 runs at a SR of 61.42%, but again FAILED to "kick on" and score a century or even 50.

Latham in particular is batting very slow (current SR 18%)... scared of getting out again. It has been a common failing of NZ batsmen over the years.
A constant annoyance is that we have batsmen who occupy the crease,"get their eye in" by facing lots of balls for few runs... and then go out without "cashing in" so to speak. There has been commentary discussion that one job of the openers is to "see off the new ball".. and use up overs as the bowler tires, for the sake of the batsmen to follow... which I agree is an aspect of the opener's role.... but he needs to do more than JUST that. And even if that is his main contribution.. it needs to be facing more balls than the 70 that Javal faced. Naturally Rigor Richardson (former annoying/boring opening batsman, now an annoying TV personality/commentator) liked the "just occupy the crease" notion... that was his claim to fame. He averaged facing 120 balls. I guess 120 is the "gold standard" if you aspire to be a boring opening batsman :roll

Full disclosure:
I am always a fan of "getting on with it" and batsmen scoring at a good rate... even if they do end up getting out sometimes (eg McCullum). I have seen too many games over the years that "run out of time"
The players can see the same weather forecast as I can (and better data) they should realize that time could be LOST in this match due to rain :doh

Latham :Q43

To be fair... Latham is bucking up his ideas a bit now... maybe Williamson is dragging him along with his own innings..

Tom Latham*(lhb) 33/109 SR 36.75
Kane Williamson(rhb) 27/29 SR 93.10

FINALLY, Latham gets a century. :91
Yeah I'm excited. Williamson should've had one too.

BTW, yesterday there were 80 overs bowled by this time and the innings break was not that long. :roll

Enjoying it though. My boy Taylor is playing well. :D

Yeah... Williamson is a champ... he REALLY deserved the ton!! :(

GREAT to see Latham bucking up his ideas as I said he should :cool

I am watching the Aussie game.... so I am missing seeing Taylor ... DANG! :roll

I think an innings break is equivalent to 3 overs... unless they combine it with scheduled lunch or tea.
Yesterday's just 87 for the day plus 40 min overtime is pathetic (there were no innings breaks) :roll
If they take off 3 overs for the innings break today.. they should at least do 87 overs today... and I think they should make up the 3 overs lost yesterday so 177 overs total in the match at Stumps tonight?

They are planning 87 overs today (+ innings break)... which is ok for today... but IMO they should also make up the 3 they lost yesterday.

1st Test, Day 3

Sri Lanka 282 (90 ov)
New Zealand 311/2 * (84 ov)
New Zealand lead by 29 runs with 8 wickets remaining in the innings

NZ in a strong position...but as always, they need to have a mind to the WEATHER (losing the last day). They need to get on with it!! (put Sri Lanka in tonight, or EARLY tomorrow at the latest)
Latham did good as it turns out. Occupying the crease and getting your eye in is OK if you do eventually cash in. Latham's century counts for a lot.
Since the openers have done THEIR job.. it now behooves the middle order top batsmen to build on that.
Williamson did that...91 runs (SR: 97.84) :)
Taylor... not so much since he had slow 50 (SR 56.81) innings and just WENT OUT!! :doh

Latham could (and should) "fill his boots" now. He has DONE his job as an opener. He should cash in on that himself in the role of a top batsman now.
I hope he can get to a double century (quickly).

Latham is working his way up Test Cricket records lists

Climbing list of Highest Individual scores at The Basin Reserve
http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine ... ype=ground

Also NZ individual highest scores list..
http://stats.espncricinfo.com/zimbabwe- ... ;type=team

Latham is "not out" at end of innings ..he "Carried his bat" for NZ innings. (batted the entire innings)
Second NZer to do that (Glen Turner did it twice)
First NZer to do it in NZ

Highest score (all time, all countries) for person carrying their bat

NZ are in an excellent position.. they should take 7 wickets and WIN by more than an innings TODAY. (not need to bat a second innings). It is just as well NZ wickets fell yesterday.... the game progressed. :)
If they had NOT been bowled out I fear they would have batted on when they should have declared :roll
I heard commentator (Styris) actually AWARE that weather could be bad tomorrow. (rain still forecast)

With Lunch looming.....Sri Lanka are hanging in... NZ bowlers do not look like taking a wicket :doh
Sri Lanka can not win this Test match... but if they survive today... there is a GOOD chance there will be no play tomorrow, and so Sri Lanka can save the match as a draw.

After Lunch - Two sessions
All Sri Lanka NEED to do is... NOT GET OUT.
Runs do not matter really, except totally negative/defensive batting always ends in tears.
Having said that, then "knocking off the deficit" would be a "psychological milestone" for Sri Lanka. It would mean that NZ have to bat a second innings, even if there is time for a win tomorrow.

Sri Lanka 282 & 137/3 * (49.5 ov)
New Zealand 578
Day 4 - Session 2: Sri Lanka trail by 159 runs with 7 wickets remaining

TEA Break
Sri Lanka 282 & 197/3 * (71 ov)
New Zealand 578
Day 4: Sri Lanka trail by 99 runs with 7 wickets remaining

Sri Lanka survived the session without losing any wickets, and the deficit is now less than 100

Kusal Mendis goes to tea on 98,

(timer on the page is approx 51 minutes fast) :cool

At 8:00AM onward... not raining, but overcast. :)
Ground staff out working on outfield.

10:30 AM: Smithy Commentating half hour before match..
Reporting "News not good... RAIN!! The covers are on." :doh
This was forecast... KNOWN... 4 days ago!!! :wall

I am not saying NZ did a lot wrong in this instance... but that could have been more down to "luck"... they were bowled out and so could not delay a declaration as they are want to do... (but they did FAIL to take any wickets over an entire day).... but in General... teams MUST give consideration to weather.. and play accordingly!

This match was already looking like a DRAW... even if there had beed a full day 5 :roll

I think DRAW is close to a certainty now!

Play to begin at 12.30 pm
session timings:
1.12:30-1:30, Lunch
2. 2:10 - 4:40; Tea
3. 5:00-7:00; Stumps
Eighty-three overs possible in the day.
So only 7 overs lost today.. not a huge deal... except they lose 3 overs most days.. it all adds up :roll

“The best laid schemes o' Mice an' Men, an' Cricket administrators, Gang aft agley"

More rain could be on the way! :roll
